i'm thinking here of (usually) subtle changes / mixes to an original song and then the new version becoming the popular widely known one which is now the only one you ever hear... ...i'm thinking primarily of 'love will tear us apart' by joy division... for the 1995 release of permanent, they added jangly guitars that made the song sound slightly more contemporary and radio-friendly... i've haven't heard the original since (other than when i play it myself)... ...others that come to mind are 'brimful of asha' by cornershop... that got the fatboy slim treatment and the original (together with brilliant middle-eight type bit) has disappeared completely... why i bring this up is because i'm sure i heard a funked up version of 'lust for life' this morning - very subtle but changed nonetheless... ...that and the fact that i hate the fact that people don't hear 'love will tear us apart' as it was originally recorded

Didnt they do that for Missing by Everything But The Girl? Or was that just a dance version of an acoustic original? Todd Terry or summat. Anyways, big hit 2nd time round.

Well I love the original version of I Ain't Got No I Got Life so obviously I hate the current remix that's in the charts. But in term of subtle changes I prefer the original single versions of Riot Radio by the Dead 60's and Love Is A Number by the White Rose Movement to the re-jigged overly polished ones that appeared on their albums.

ha ha, classic Seriously. "You got the Love" by Candi Staton, that has been re-released with added strings. Great tune though

yeah, that re-release by candi staton isn't a touch on the original, though... it leaves out the whole "occassionally..." verse and other stuff... ...anyway, that's sorta a remix... was looking more for the 'small changes to make the kids like it' hatchet job as for my diction, i'm glad you think that it's classic

That tune by fatboy slim is a remix too, certainly not a small change. It totally changes the song

guess i treated that one differently because the remix was done just a few months after the original and then the original was completely forgotten... ah, you know what i mean... ...or do you? i'm not talking about obvious remixes that offer an alternative... i'm talking about replacements

Everything but the girl's missing was remixed by Todd Terry. Was just an average tune before that

Yeah, i know what you mean but its still a major remix, were arent talking subtleties. When Beastie boys released "Body Movin" , Fatboy Slims version was released around the same time. It was his version that was given the main release (deservedly).

fair enough... you get the idea, anyway... really just posted to say that everyone dances away to 'love will tear us apart' not realising that it ain't the tune it was... personally, i think it lost its soul...

I liked the single version of 'Soldier Girl' by the Polyphonic Spree.
