Went to see Fairuza on Friday night in Crawdaddy. Just now I was having a look on their myspace & was very surprised to see Rick O'Shea was a fan, Not that he plays (or is allowed to play) any of their stuff. http://www.myspace.com/fairuza

Well I think it's fair to say that Rick (like practically any other music radio DJ) is a music-lover first and a radio presenter second.

Yep, Radio Presenter seems to indicate a certain amount of freedom when in actual fact it's a job that comes with a play-list.

rick o'shea is one of the worst offenders in this case. he always claims to be a big fan of alt irish stuff ln (via his myspace, bebo and blog pages) but never ever plays them on his show because, he claims, he is not allowed to. its really hyprocritical of him especially as there are other DJs on 2FM who play new irish stuff and never make a big deal of it. still, thats rick o'shea for ya.

Is his name really Rick O'Shea? I don't see why people give out about DJs not playing something. I mean, it's not as if every Irish DJ has a patriotic duty to plug Irish bands, especially since most of them are s**t. I think we should all congradulate these DJs for shielding us from the horrors of mediocre Irish indie and introducing us to foreign gems like The pu**ycat Dolls and what not.

i think i can spot una-irony here but nonethless here goes. the problem with rick o'shea (no, not his real name which is Barry. Or Jason.) is that he goes on CLAIMING to be a fan of all this great irish muck/rock and then, given he has a show on a national radio station, doesnt do anything about it. he's a f**king hyprocrite of the highest order and should be forced to listen to his patter day and night.

but in a job, you generally have to do what your boss tells you.

True, but how many people here would stick with a job which required that you act like an arrogant c*nt,

if you were one already, it mightn't be an issue I suppose. But we all have to do s**t in our jobs that we don't like. I had to listen to the new Adem record the other day. Ugh.

apologies, wasnt quite finished there. Point was though, that I dont think theres many people who post here, that would do the job he does, if it entailed playing sh1te music all day and sounding like a twat.

I reckon the guy is pretty spineless, playlist my arse. If he really had the will to get a track on the air he would, even if it was one track per show. It's no like the station is owned by clearchannel (yet), it's a national, semi-public service broadcaster, he has some leverage he can use by simply reminding his bosses of their obligations. I don't think DJs have to play Irish music out of a sense of duty, but if you come across something good, thats relatively commercial (i.e. not and avant-noize free jazz record or something) that already has a following, then theres no reason not to play it. I'm sure he could probably reach some kind of compromise, where there's a will theres a way, I think he lacks the will.

what Binokular said and then some. the problem with o'shea is that he is a spineless jobsworth who blows smoke up all these irish band's arses and then, when he has a chance to actually DO something, just plays the new red hot chili peppers (bet he got some freebie trip) or puss y cat (did that get censored?) dolls. he should be ashamed of himself.

that new RHCP single (Dani California) is the worst thing ever. Rick O Shea is not in a position to play the music he might like better, because that is not the description of his show. There are plenty of other DJs who play Irish indie music. Much more than any other genre other than mainstream radio white noise MOR kak.

rick o shea is also a "fan" (ie friend) of my electro metal joke band. as is Nikki Hayes. and dave fanning. and Ray foley. i am not holding out hope that any will play us on their respective shows.

not true una. he's pitched as one of the station's indie/hip-hop/alternative DJs. he's the one who's supposed to be playing all the alternative stuff from Hard-Fi to what have u. He's also supposed to be playing irish stuff (its called "public service broadcasting") and, despite claiming to be a fan of all these bands, he never ever does. rick's a fake - in name and on air.

I thought he was just another one of these bland DJ's with their put on mid-atlantic accent.
