Have a quick question that perhaps some audiophiles on the board can help me out with? Have a nice enough hi-fi/separates set-up but my CD player is skipping and causing me much displeasure. I've tried to isolate the problem by checking the connections etc. and these are all fine. As the CD player was boxed for a while i thought it might be condesation on the lens but after giving it a couple of days it's still skipping. So, what other reasons could it be? Dust on the lens that a cleaning might amend or could it be something more sinister and expensive to repair? Want to exhaust all avenues of "quick-fixing" before i bring it to hi-fi hospital.

Yes, unfortunate choice of username but i'm stuck with it now. Don't know what was going through my head when picking it. Anyway, perhaps it's to do with some memory from your teenage years that you've been repressing?

Did you try buying a len cleaning CD? You can pick them up in most music or hi-fi stores. Failing that is it sitting on a rickety table that causes it to skip everytime you move in it's vicinity?

I know it might sound funny, but are you sure the speakers aren't too close to the CD player on the same surface as it? Had something similar happen myself happen a while back where I couldn't figure out why CDs were skipping in a perfectly good CD player. Turned out the vibrations from speakers were causing it to skip when I had the volume turned up a bit with anything bass heavy on! Moving the speakers sorted it.

Yeah, good suggestion. The thought did occur to me although it didn't happen with my old CD player so i reckoned that the same should apply with this one. I'll test it at varying volumes and move 'em to see what happens. One speaker is quite close to it and it's a more sensitive CD player than the old one. Picking up some lens cleaner today. It'll be a pain in the swiss if it has to have surgery. Word of advice on lens cleaners, beware the ones with brushes on them as they can actually damage, in some cases, your CD lens. Thanks for the suggestions people. Glad this didn't turn into a thread about......ahem..., biscuits and the like!
