Congrats indeed to Julie. And chapeau to Pilchard for sticking the 20 notes on her a while back, enjoy that trip to the bookies!

Apparently half the crowd left after it was announced she had won, i think that's pretty poor form, fair enough some people wouldn't have agreed with the choice but they should have at least shown some respect and watched her play, I still can't fathom why RTE turned it down, I mean it was grand listening to it on the radio but i'd love to have been able to watch it as well esp for duke special his performance is always a great visual spectacle as well as the music..heard his van got broken into and completely trashed before the gig, scumbags robbed 300 Cds as well, for fecks sake

Half the crowd did leave but I didn't get the sense that they left because they were annoyed at who won or disagreed with the decision. Granted if Bell X1 had of won maybe more people would have stayed but given that the show kicked off at 7:30 and most people didn't leave their seats during the show it was fair enough to want to leave at 11pm and get the last bus home etc. It was a Tuesday night. Great night, great atmosphere, great performances. Cormac Battle was a disaster. Alison Curtis was ok but Battle was just plain embarassing. Duke Special were the highlight of the night for me followed by Hal and then Julie. One other thing, I think the crowd should have been reminded that the award was based entirely on the album and not live performances on the night. Well done to the organisers on what is surely the Irish Mercury Prize. My one hope is that its kept open to the public and doesn't become an industry / showbiz event.

yeah good few people left after it was announced but as bonzo pointed out it was a pretty long night and a Tuesday. Julie got a great reception when it was announced that she won, even if a lot of the crowd were there for BellX1. Battle - don't know what in God's name they were thinking putting him on stage. Absolutely awful. They should have skipped the introductions. The videos and music gave enough information about the artists without their ill-prepared little speeches (don't think they'd even read over them beforehand). Thought Emmett Tinley was brave to go out with just his acoustic guitar and thought his voice sounded great. Cane 141 and Duke Special added something a little diverse to the proceedings. Turn's second song was great and overall impressed with all the performances, it's pretty hard to go out play two songs and leave the stage. Looking forward to next year!

Seems to be a running theme here for Ms Finneys live performances.

I was thinking about peoples opinion of her on this board when I was watching her last night. I've now come to the conclusion that she isn't nervous but just has big eyes! She kind of looks shocked all of the time. I admit that she is not everyones cup of tea but she must be doing something right? I think if she did her own gig in Vicar St to an audience who really wanted to see her perform it would work well. Shes one of those artists that demand silence when they perform. Duke Special were my big find of the night. Definitely buying that album.

i'm absolutely over the moon to hear that julie feeney won - i've been playing her album constantly for months and it just gets better and better. saw her live at bewleys theatre at the weekend and she was really, really class. loads of UK A&R people in there too as a result of the Choice Prize thing so i think this one may well run and run.

Good luck to Ms. Feeney. And great to see Duke Special getting some long overdue recognition. I've been raving about him to anyone who'd listen since I caught him at a Ruby session a few years ago.

Odd that, Duke Special were supporting the Frames a cupla weeks ago in Vicar st, and there were some hairy scenes when the vans were bein parked. The flats at the back of Vicar st just ain't safe. Would've thought he'd have known better. He sounded great on the radio last night. Lovely character too. I've listened to the EP, is that his only release? Or is there an album?
