Was passing Golden Discs the other day and saw this poster with a huge lizard's eye staring out at me and I thought, 'oh, new Jurrasic Park movie' but no, its the new Rodrigo y Gabriella album; 'oh look we are mexicans and we play Metallica on classical guitars', which begs the question, is David Icke right and are my least favourite guitar duo really alien masters of the universe controlling the world (or at least MCD) ? They just wanted to avoid the ongoing speculation of 'Are they together?' or 'Are they siblings?' or 'Are they just friends?'. So they opted to use that artwork instead, not overly appealing. I liked 'Re-Foc' alot but haven't heard the new one yet.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but who is this David Icke.
dear Rev, you are ever the cynic! Rodrigo y Gabriela do something totally new and different and so lovably nice at their gigs (at least they used to be when they used to play around these parts before they got all famous and stuff). The fact that they play Metallica classically is closer to a lighthearted joke than a defining characteristic. They're nothing spectacular, but they play some good music. Agree with Gar - re-foc was an excellent album.

I think they are pretty open on the are they together question. See a very open interview in that rag of a mag hotpress.
They are also lovely lovely people - i toured with them once and there is definately magic in their performance even if it's not the type of music I'd select to play in my sitting room.

Read the interview link I posted above.
Long story short, he's an exfootball/tv Pundit with a tendency to wear shiny tranksuits, who has a strong believe that the worlds leaders are alien lizards hellbent on controlling the world for their own good. Or something.

"Rodrigo y Gabriela do something totally new" - play covers on guitars! C'mon!
I think R & G are very talented, lovely people, and make a nice noise. But they are inexplicably popular.
I refer you to The Hundred Monkey Phenomenon:

They are great live but I don't think their style lends itself well to home listening. It's like listening just to the sound of a film

david icke played in goal for coventry, as did steve ogrizovic (his successor)
steve ogrizovic looks like a vistitor to the planet and the species (see www.uglyfootballers.com)....might explain it...
his shell tracksuits are legendary (ickes that is)
anyhow R&G are talented, really gifted guitarists but a whole album of it??......if you close you eyes and listen to it you might as well be in a restaurant......
once again the listeners of ray d'arcy (the people who brought you the very "talented" Michael Joseph Harte) have new and "exciting" heros to brighten their lives....
me.....i'm hittin the axl rose circus in june with the motley crue...
gonna get me some photos and send em to www.awfulplasticsurgery.com ......

Back in the days before nite links and late drinking (that'd be early ninties), I'd go out on a Thursday night, more often than not to mcGonnigles on South Anne Street. Most weeks it was alternative night but about once every three months it was 'Club Sandino' where they played latin music all night, from Santana to salsa to flamenco. Being throroughly pinted up, you would have *seriously* good fun for the first hour after which your threshold for such music was reached. After about three hours of it, you never wanted to hear another bongo in your life. I'd file Rod e Gab under the same heading, good in small doses.

a) I'm not a redneck wannabee, I'm an authentic Good Ole Boy, there is a difference involving pick up trucks and empty beer cans.
b) Mexican music is part of Country Music, its called Tejano and its based on Traditional Mexican music brought over the border to Texas.
c) If you like R&G, you might also like the Kilfenora Tea Boy Metal Collective, they play covers of Slayer on traditional Irish instruments.

...or Beatallica, a bizarre Metallica/Beatles tribute. http://www.beatallica.org/
Jules, rednecks drive battered Ford-150 trucks while shooting roadsigns while good 'ole boys drive Dodge Chargers? Or at least a bright orange Micra with confederate flag painted on the roof and 01 on the door? (seriously, there used to be one like this going round the Cork area! )

the slayer thing plain freaks me out as a huge fan of both genres of music. cant imagine winning an all ireland medal with that though!

David Icke once predicted ( ten years ago I think ) that Belfast would be submerged underwater. Obviously he was wrong, which is nice since I'm going out with someone up there.
