It appears that country music is now hip, yes I am happy about that as I have been a lone voice in the wilderness on its behalf for sometime [;) According to promoter John Reynolds, a country music festival is on the cards for summer 2006 along the lines of Electric Picnic. I guess this is the year for it, what with 'Walk The Line' riding high and 'My Name is Earl' bringing redneck humour to the masses on C4..."a country fair is like Disneyland for poor people'. And before anyone mentions 'Brokeback Mountain', from the clips I saw on the BAFTAs the other night, I can't take it seriously, its like one really long 'Lets piss off the Republicans', but I did listen to the soundtrack on iTunes and there is a seriously kickin' version of 'Devils Right Hand' on it by Steve Earle.

theres also going to be a barbeque competition where the cowboy with the fattest pig on a spit will win a year's supply of saddle-soap. And there will be a banjo marathon too, like that scene in Deliverance only with more banjos Plus the Redneck Manifesto have been booked for it by mistake as well. A great weekend away altogether.

Wouldn't mind seeing Ryan Adams or Whiskeytown there.I think it's a cool idea to have a country festival, the festivals that are out there cater for too wide an audience and the genre is vague, hence you get packs of scobies wandering oxegen etc.. Wouldn't see it happening here though I don't think.

There is already an excellent country music festival in ireland. Its called the Kilkenny Rythmn and Roots festival and its there to promote roots music and not give another chance for Van The Man to bore the pants off the rest of us. http://www.kilkennyroots.com/Festival2006.asp Here are three must sees for 2006 Alejandro Escovedo Robbie Fulks Jeffrey Foucault

seconded. went to this last year and it was fantastic. don't think the line-up leaps off the page as much for this year tho. but still wil probably head to it.

S'funny how Van the Man is conveniently bundled into soul/celtic/roots/country/rock/blues as the festival promoter sees fit. Correct genre designation? Grumpycore.
