There's a new music show coming up on TG4 called Deis Roc (based in Belfast) but I read Channel 6 are planning a similar show. Anyone able to shed more light on this for me?

Channel 6 are aiming at the aul 18-35s and they've mentioned music in their programming, so it's very probably they'll have a music show.
The only question is, will it be s**t?

That's the TG4 one aint it? I know nothing about Channel 6 (why 6? RTE 1, 2, TV3, TG4...what's 5?) except that they just bought a load of US packages like Frasier, Sex In the city, etc.. Good to see the emphasis on homegrown talent.

it seems that Darragh Purcell (ex-MCD, ex-TV3 The Sound Room) is the guy in charge of commissioning all the TV for Channel 6

"We were never keen on having a competition element to the series and would much rather showcase new talent and just let our platform on TG4 help to get the music out there, but alas the reality TV frenzy has not yet ended and we have no choice but to make it a competition."

nice bit of honesty for a change, possibly?

it would be nicer if they had a bit of backbone, the way to end the "reality TV frenzy" would be not to contribute anymore to it, they could make an excellent programme showcasing unsigned talent but its safer to turn it into some stupid competition

I would totally agree with you, but would you not agree that the primary aim of this show is the promotion of the language, therefore any means by which this is done can be justified by the end result? i.e. desired aim is that the likes of you and I tuning in and trying to catch what they're saying...
the fact thats in Irish is enough of a disadvantage in an overcrowded T.V. market...I'm not in that business just (literally) an observer :)
so any existing sucessful vehicle is the best way to get the foot in the door...
