Ok, another poll, but ffs, The Libertines at no. 1 and apparantly 50% of the vote. I must be way behind the times. Metallica at no. 8. I would have a problem with too.
The rest, fair enough, I never really got Nirvana or the whole grunge scene in general, but I can see why they are no. 2. They spoke for a generation etc..
1. The Libertines – Up the Bracket
2. Nirvana – Nevermind
3. Stone Roses - Stone Roses
4. The Strokes - Is This It
5. Radiohead- The Bends
6. The Beatles - Sergeant Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band
7. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
8. Metallica – The Black Album
9. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
10. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Libertines at No 1 is a sick joke. I have absolutely no doubt that this result was down to a serious vote rigging effort by a small hardcore of Libertines nuts.
Jeff Buckley's "Grace" should have been in there.

Christ on a bike!! The libertines!? Has to be a hijacked poll. A mediocre album at best and I do not know anyone who would rate it against the others in that list.
What really worries me about this list is Sgt Peppers and the Sex Pistols. It's like Pavlov's dogs, mention 'Landmark Album' and people appear to be pre-programmed to vote for some variation of Peppers, Pet Sounds, Nevermind the Bollocks etc etc. I just don't get it. Are their legions of the 50-70 year olds listening to Tom Dunne in the evening busily texting and emailing this poll. I don't think so. So who the hell votes for them?

It's the cool poll.
Judging by the content of Dunne's show, I don't believe for a second any of their listeners like those albums. If they did they wouldn't be listening to his show.

Odelay is a major 90's landmark. Get's overlooked quite a bit I think.

An utterly ridiculous comment and probably the worst example of musical snobbery I've heard in ages. Which ultra hip, cutting edge, down with the kids DJ should we be listening to then ?

Explain?
If that top 10 was representative of what listeners like, why the hell are they listening to Tom Dunne?
Music snobbery? I couldn't if I tried. I have no idea what dj the kids should be town with, but if that's their top 10 it shouldn't be tom dunne. And that is why the poll is a 'cool' poll. A top ten of what people want to like and want others to know they like.

Its actually not, in my opinion, even remotely close to musical snobbery John Doe. The list above is with two or three exceptions pretty accurate. If you look back over recent and past "Top whatevers" you will see that Nirvana is usually there, the Beatles are always there, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Radiohead, Oasis's debut constantly comes up and whether we like them or not, it was an album that sparked off the 60's again, albeit with a modern rock edge. So, my question is, How hard is it to come up with a poll like this when the precedent has already been set by so many other polls. People get pi*sed off when they see polls repeated and repeated and more often then not, the same bands coming up but the acts which are there, produced quality albums. I have my own thoughts as to a few who I would include in my own Top 10 albums but that is based on my musical preference. This is based on years of music and sales and also highlights how the commerically viable acts will consistently make there place in these polls whereas the bands that are being discussed for example in Eoghan's thread "your most obscure bands" will consistently be overlooked, hence anger outrage and bemusement!
This list is a bog standard radio top 10 list, nothing new and nothing exciting and we'll all have forgotten it tomorrow. However, Tom Dunne's show does present us with access to more obscure acts so in fairness to Nerraw, I agree that it is not very reflective of the shows day to day music.

Which is kinda of why I posted it in the first case. It's supposed to be about "landmark" albums. There is alot of albums I love but I would hardly call them Landmark. I find some of the selections odd (ok only about 2 maybe, but its supposed to a top 10). Someone asked earlier on, Who cares? That's why I care.

A Sea Change albums list would be more interesting where albums are voted on by how they changed music (not by popularity if you get me). By that reckoning, none of the albums listed in Tom Dunne's top ten would really deserve a look in, yawn
And I invite you to prove me wrong on all counts with regard to those ten albums.

That's my point and I think Tom Dunne was saying that as well. People just don't listen.

I think you could make a case forhe Sex Pistols album.

I think a case could be made for The Stone Roses, Strokes and Nirvana as well. I know (like the Pistols) they weren't the first, but they marked a change.
What is missing from this list is Franz Ferdinand (why is there never a spell check on these boards!!). Though not the greatest album of the last few years, it certainly sounded different the first time you heard it on radio, and look what followed it it's wake.
BTW The Libertines, is someone taking the .......

I'm hugely confused, Ted.
Nerraw, what exactly is your point ? Tom Dunne's show is too mainstream ? The top ten landmark albums are too mainstream ? Secretly everyone who listens to Tom Dunne is a hardcore Westlife fan but wants to pretend they're cool by listening to Tom Dunne ? Who is Tom Dunne ? Or all of the above ?
If Nirvana and Metallica are now considered as safe and predictable as Westlife then everything I know about music is obviously wrong.
