anyone ever been? i heard that going as a fan, aswell as being seriously pricey, is a bit crappy. all the gigs clashing, s**t crowds full of guarded a&r dudes, madness getting from one place to another etc. i will happily stand corrected if i'm wrong.

who cares - it's the best indie party in the world. Of course there are faults, it's massive.
Ctraltdelete's post reminds me of a cartoon strip I saw a few years ago of a guy crawling thirsty through the desert. Eventually he gets to a soft drink stand and says "Diet Coke please." The guy at the stand says "sorry, we only have regular Coke." He crawls away, back into the desert.
As an aside to an aside, what are the festival dates?

I'm sure it is great, i just would be wary of forking out 1500 quid on going to it. worm your way onto a junket is the best way to go to sxsw i'd say. unless you're loaded. and i'd still say you'd have a better time at atp.

Not been to SXSW but I've been to CMJ in New York and it's great fun.

Always one that slips through. I also see that Norn Iron bands are grouped under UK .... Way too many there to filter.

Amazing lineup, if I was going, this is who I'd make and effort to see:
Adult. (Detroit, MI)
Annie (Bergen, Norway)
Asobi Seksu (New York, NY)
The Avalanches (Melbourne, Australia)
Black Dice (Brooklyn, NY)
eX-Girl (Tokyo, Japan)
Ladytron (Liverpool, UK)
Metric (Toronto, ON)
Last year, the SXSW website had this really cool bittorrent file you could download, it contained a track from every single band that played SXSW last year. Took ages to download but well worth it, I hope they'll do it again this year for those of us not lucky enough to attend.

What are these like? I know Emily Haines is involved in Broken Social Scene and did the vocals on one of my favourite songs of theirs but it does seem that involvement in BSS is no guaruntee that I'll like someones other projects as much (Stars, Feist)

I've only got the album "Old World Underground, Where are you now", their new one slipped out recently and I've yet to hear it, but "Old World Underground" is very hooky indie, very tight bass/drums, lovely analog keyboards. Takes a lot of cues from new order and there are a lot of bands doing similar new wave kind of stuff, but it's still a very enjoyable record.
This is probably the best place to buy it from and you can hear samples too: http://cdbaby.com/cd/metric
