With the mention of astrel weeks in someone elses thread the other day it got me to thinking, is Van Morrission Ireland's best contribution to modern music? has any other Irish person/band made as significant contribution to music, over such a long period of time? i cant really think of any other person who has produced albums as good as astrel weeks and moon dance. granted his last album wasn't great but am i way off? sorry not trying to start any kind of lists.

hmmmmmm,
Well I have the displeasure of listening to 98fm in work all day. The Corrs came on, and I started giving out about them, and an Australian who works with me said this:
"Y'Know, you Irish go on about your 'contribution to music' and all that, but in fairness, after U2, the Corrs are the biggest thing that's come out of Ireland. You go on about Sinead O'Connor and that, but she's only had one big song really"
What about Thin Lizzy? I asked
"Nobody know's them. They don't, seriously, nobody know's about Thin Lizzy. They're not big"
What about Van Morrison? I asked
he said "Ok, yeah Van Morrison I guess"
So what we can draw from this discussion is that Ireland's biggest contributions to the music of the world have been U2, Van Morrison, and The Corrs.
And if that's the case, I'd probably have to go with Van

You should ask him what he thinks Australia's contribution to music has been. Men at Work, Midnight Oil, INXS, Slim Dusty, Kylie, Olivia Newton John ? I'm dying to hear what he has to say, seriously, ask him and report back.

Ah well, I don't wanna start a racial debate. We weren't talking about Australia, we were talking about Ireland, y'know? At any rate, the fecker's off to Prague tomorrow, so I'll probably never see him again.
I think his point was, there aren't many acts that get to a huge popular international level and manage to keep some sort of musical integrity. Van Morrison and U2 are really the only two that properly fit that criteria, from the point of view of someone who isn't Irish.
I would disagree with him, and most of you would too I'm sure, but I do think there is something to his arguement. Just.....something. that's all
And yeah, its Astral Weeks, not Astrel weeks

Rev,I take it your being sarcastic but, erm, didn't Australia give us probably the greatest rock/metal band of all time in AC/DC not too mention slightly quieter bands like The Go-Betweens/Grant McLennan, The Birthday Party/Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Mick Harvey, The Vines (great debut album), The Avalanches, Kasey Chambers,Dirty Three, Ben Lee, Powderfinger,The Whitlams, You Am I,Something For Kate, The Sleepy Jackson and as you mentioned, the great Midnight Oil.Give me any one of the above over their mediocre Irish equivalents any day!
How about Jet, who are unspeakably awful, yet at the same time have made the sort of impact outside of their own country that the likes of Frames and Paddy Casey could only dream about?
Plus if you throw in commercial pop-artists (spit!) like Kylie Minogue, (arguably the biggest female popstar in the world after Madonna)Natalie Imbruglia, Holly Valance, INXS et al I don't any Irish person is in any position to question Australia's contribution to music.

Actually, I'm not, I was out surfing today and I'm stoked and chilled in equal measure , I'm just interested to hear what an Australian thinks are the most important musicians that Oz has produced. And by the way, I'm a fan of both Midnight Oil and Slim Dusty, he's great fun
As for AC/DC, yes I agree the greatest rock band in the world although to be fair Brian Johnson (who replaced Bon Scott as vocalist) is from Newcastle Upon Tyne, so stricly speaking they are an Aussie/UK band. Brian may be a pom but he sure can rawk !

For starters I think van is probably Irelands most significant
contributor to the world of music but not because of bloody
Astral weeks.
Off the top of ma head, St. dominic's preview, veedon fleece, into the
music, common one,no guru no teacher no method, poetic champions compose,
these are better albums than Astral weeks which is a fine album but
way overrated.
Also I nominate Summertime in England as his finest song.
The improvised live versions have to be heard to be believed.

I hate to say this but I believe Enya sells more albums than U2 (as far as I'm aware).

That is depressing. Ah it's gotta be Van. What about all the stuff with Them, T.B Sheets as well? Moondance? He's amazin'! Album sales wouldn't really be a good indicator sure would they? Yiz know yourselves...

The Chieftans are huge abroad as well and I'd say their album sales would be up there at the top as well.
