How about addressing the cowardice of the commercial stations when it comes to their playlist policy. All the "decent" music is stuck away in the evening when 2FM/TodayFM are competeing for the same audience. There is a huge, untapped audience out there that any station could tap into by dropping the chart stuff for a couple of hours in the afternoon and playing stuff to appeal to them. It's especially important for them now that Phantom are coming on air (sometime in the future) and they'll most likely be losing some of their evening audience to them.

In fairness, did Today FM not try this when they started out (I think they were called Ireland FM at the time) when they played a fair bit of indie/alternative stuff in the a/noon but found to their detriment that they had no audience so they reverted to the tried and trusted FM104/98 FM routine.

This has been my particular bugbear for donkey's. I don't listen to daytime radio full stop. Not since i was on a bus to Galway in 1999 and heard Cher's "Do You Believe In Love" played 5 times. Yes 5 f**king times over the course of the 3 1/2 hour journey. Come the revolution the day-time jocks and paymasters will be first agains the wall. Commercialisation of day-time radio is just more seepage from the anal sphincter muscle of capitalism into the toilet bowl of our blinkered existence. Harrumph.

in fairness, it's all about ratings... today fm even had to knock donal dineen back to a graveyard slot because he wsn't getting enough ratings in the already sleepy 10.00 to 12.00 slot. pure commercial sense, nothing else

Agreed. It's all down to what they can charge for advertising which is directly related to the number of listeners. Tragically, people want to hear Cher 5 times in 3 hours. My own personal hell was a summer spent working in a light fitting factory in London in 1988. Radio station played the number one every half hour as policy. Yaz 'The only way is up' was number one for 6 weeks followed by Chubby Checker and the Fat Boys 'Wipeout' for a similar length. I still feel sick when I hear either.

i agree. it seems like a great idea to try and attract the "disinfranchised" listeners who dislike the usual stuff from 98fm et all, but the question always comes back to who listens to the radio during the day. most people cant 'cos they are at work. in offices where there is a radio playin, theres more than one person listening so you often end up selecting the least offensive lowest common denominator crap, so that know one dilikes it too much. theres just no real market during the day.

there isn't really one overriding 'scene' at the moment. It's all very scattered. Thank Christ.
