The Readers' Poll results for 2005 are now published. Check them out at: http://www.cluas.com/poll/2005/readers_poll_results.htm Apolgies for the delay in publishing them. I always underestimate how much time it takes to count the votes (and to weed out the obvious chancers voting multiple times, you know who you are, etc). So, diasagree with the readers' choices? Well then post your comments back here. eoghan

2005 reader's poll, dedicated to those who weren't pissed off enough about the writer's one.

did anyone see Paul Noonan in the Hotpress Xmas edition? he's starting to look like Jerry Fish. I don't have anything against Bell X 1 per se, Volcano, Snakes and Snakes and Eve... are good songs. But as a critic, you couldn't possibly rate them as inventive or anything extra special. That said, they do the job as a fine local band, so they should keep up that good work. The Frames are a good live band. They are just annoying.

...enlighten us critic, wtf passes as inventive then?? small chance your answer is going to reverse my opinion that the above statement is an exapmle of talking s**te Don't like some of their stuff but they do have several jems, especially 2nd album. a very much a creative bunch! regardless, Republic of Loose would have been my shout for Irish band of '05

Why take offence at a band not being regarded as massively inventive? There are other virtues that can make a band great. Take one of my alltime favourite indie bands - Galaxie 500. They were quite simply "The Velvet Underground Mark Two" (ok with a bit of very early non-dance New Order thrown in), but they did it so well with such an appreciation of tone and played so cohesively together while still managing to put their own personality into the music that they weren't simply a pastiche. It helps, but you don't have to be at the bleeding edge of music to be great. I wouldn't call myself a fan, but Bell X1 do write a couple of really good tunes, even occasional moments of wry humour in their lyrics, however anyone who thinks they are even remotely avant-garde is just kidding themselves.

I think I'm entitled to "Hype" (by the way thanks for putting the word "Hype" and Pugwash together, first time for everything!!) PUGWASH because I am PUGWASH..... but I choose not to, because I've seen the inner-workings of the modern day "Irish" music scene and it's simply not worth gettin' yourself into a lather over.....!! CERTAINLY NOT..... I actually don't understand your post Pilchard (I wish I did) but if you're refering to the fact that my music has not been recognised in anyway by some on-line poll, oh more's the pity me.....!! I've released numerous singles, 3 albums in Ireland, 2 in Australia and NEVER got an "Official" recognition for my work, so to be honest with ya', if I don't get per-plexed about THAT, a little "Cluas" poll (Though in my heart "Cluas" is huge ) will have no effect!! But thanks for the mention Pilchard!! I must be strong enough in your ceribral-ablong-gata to think of me, cheers and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! TW.
