What album(s) did you buy off the back of a recommendation or review or extensive coverage, but were let down by it?

I heard Antony & The Johnsons for the first time the other morning (dont have the album), the video with Kim Basinger in bed.
Not knowing who it was, I stuck with it til the end to find out who it was. I was amazed to find out who it was after hearing so many good things about them.
Painful. Not for me.

I bought the album on the strenght of the Lou Reed number which I like. I prob sound homophobic when I say this, but it's far too gay for me. |

Arcade Fire - Funeral
I bought this based purely on hype (as I am wont to do) and was not so much disappointed as confused about all the fuss. It's a very good album, but very over-hyped.

Has anyone listened to a band called "South", I have one of their tunes, "Colour in Waves" which is great, thinkin bout buyin the album but am quite broke, is it worth investing in?

Yes, this year's award for most ludicrously over-hyped act is Antony...I cannot people like listen to that voice. It is actually painful, sounds like someone doing a very bad Bryan Ferry impression.
Way to gay for me, not that there's anything wrong with that as George Costanza might say. |

I'm not sure that an artist not being to your taste = overrated.
For example, I'm a long time fan of Bruce Springsteen but I found 'Devils and Dust' did not live up to the praise heaped upon it and, after a few listens, it has been consigned to a dusty part of my cd collection.

I can live with three of your choices, but The Go! Team are fantastic. I can understand that the "faders turned up to 11" production style is not going to be to everyones taste, but it is an energetic and exciting album that's refreshingly different to whats around at the moment. It's an utterly chaotic throwback to big beat, the nearest thing to compare it to would probably be The Avalanches (which I also love) or even early Fatboy Slim (Better living through chemistry). They are heavily influenced by Sonic Youth and it shows, not so much in style, but you know the way early sonic youth albums were more noise, potential and fun than actual tunes? Thats kinda like what the Go! Team feels like. Most importantly though, it just makes me feel good.
The Juan Macleans album "less than human" certainly wasn't hyped in terms of getting lots of exposure, but most reviews tended to praise it a lot. Personally I found it a little underwhelming. It's pretty funky, but sonically a little dull in terms of the textures. The album kinda breezes by you without much really standing out and demanding your interest. It's a good album, just not a great one.
There has probably been a lot of overhyped albums this year from the current NME darlings, but to be honest, artists I actually like already have been releasing (or even re-releasing) so many great albums this year, I haven't really had time to notice. |

can't agree with M.I.A. though it was one of the year's best. The Juan Macclean wasn't all it was cracked up to be. A couple of decent tracks but mostly filler. Summed up a pretty dull year in dance/electonic music.

Haven't heard the new version, though the differences aren't supposed to be noticeable enough to ruin the album. I have the original 2004 release, have you listened to both versions? Does the new version survive "copyright cleanup" OK?

I was just being glib to get it into the 2005 category. Not sure which version it was, I suspect the original and it did nothing for me. |

I wouldnt recommend that particular album, especially as their first one is so good. "From Here on In" is easily one the best albums i've ever bought. Far better than their latest. Really underated band
