i think there pretty good . they dont s**te on about how trendy they are . they dont even promote singles but get to no.1 in england.
And i was lucky enough to see them in whelans a while ago and they where deadly and where nice people as well not full of themselves because of the nme hype. but i know what i think i wanna hear what other people have to say about the predicted band of 2006

I've been pretty non-plussed about what I've heard of them so far. It's pretty typical of what the NME has been digging over the last 2 years.

Saw em (and heard em) for the first time on Jools the other night and I really enjoyed them. It's nothing groundbreaking or nowt, bit like The Jam but I thought they sounded great. Fair play to em

Saw that myself, I liked them too. They remind me of a whole heap of bands from a bygone time BUT they seem honest in what they're doing. Which is always a plus & even though they're not really doing anything that hasn't been done before, they were a breath of fresh air, nice break from all those "intelligent bands"....you know the type....you can spot them a mile away cos they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Give me young loud messers any day. Hats off to Artic Monkeys, they made me turn up the TV really loud!

Ahh me likey.
Good cheeky lyrics and a sense of humour - I like the songs and their guerrilla-style tactics. Blue Peter badges all round.

yeh, heard the album and it's pretty good overall - definitely a few belters in there, some fillers too though
one track in particular unashamedly rips off the riff from that big OCS song from about 10 years ago - it's identical! right at the start of the song too

I dont believe the hype at all to be honest. NME have labelled the frontman, Andy Turner as a "Lyrical Genius". Yeah right!!!! His lyrics are o.k., but not worthy of the status of genius! Genius, it would seem, is a word which is just casually thrown around by music journalists and cultural critics in general. Richey Manic, Thom Yorke, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, Morrissey....maybe even Bono- these men are the only lyric writers I can think of who are worthy of the label of genius. Andy Turner is way, way out of their league.
As for the music itself.....I feel the same way towards Arctic Monkeys as I do towards The Ordinary Boys, in that it's nothing the Jam or the Specials havent already done. They've been built up as creating the same buzz as the Stone Roses in '89 or Oasis in '94, but I dont believe any of it to be honest.

taking the NME seriously in 2005 is bad for your health.
i saw some of their gig in whelans a while back and really enjoyed it. Liked the single too. But, like gar said, will wait for the album to come along and see what I think did. could be the shortest rise and fall since sigue sigue sputnik or they really could be primed for that new "arcade fire arcade fire" tag
or are Wolf parade ther new "arcade fire arcade fire"? Their album is INCREDIBLE and the live show is FAB! No crash helmets or large singers in waistcoats jumping into the crowd but the same kind of intensity.

the achievement of the Arctic Monkeys has signalled the end of this 'episode' in 'indie' music. They're not very good, so people think they are, and then they get to number one, somehow, for some reason lost on most of us, including, presumably, the Sugababes. How bizarre. How bizarre.

Please elaborate, which episode exactly?

Getting to Number One lost any form of credibilty a couple of decades back. The Artic Monkeys are simply the latest act to fall under the NME/over-hyped spotlight. It was the same with Babyshambles, they recieved tons of coverage declaring them the most exciting new band. But when their album started to get reviewed the exposure died down. I suppose we'll have to wait until Artic Monkeys release their album and see if people are still as interested in them by then!!!

It's not a case of credibility, in my opinion, it's just a really interesting end to say, maybe the last two years. Starting with the cross over of Franz Ferdinand, the backlash against Bloc Party and then ending with the ultimate achievement of a band who aren't 'meant' to get to number one...by getting to number one.
I'm sure I could express this at greater (and more articulate) length in an op-ed. Which I may do. You have been warned.

spot on una. just as the whole blur vs oasis battle for no was the last call for brit-pop, this arctic monkeys at no 1 is the end book-end for britpop 2. it also proves, as with belle and sebastian winning a Brit a few years ago, that u can hype pop things via the net.

i think you might be a bit harsh there pilchard. they are actually quite a good band who have not even released an album. i definitely dont think it means the end of britpop2 if it ever exsisted. but i do think the net hype thing worked. but only from reactions on forums like this from there gigs. not by promotion from the band.

i hear ya emu, but i didnt mean that comment as a slight on the Monkeys. I meant that they going to No 1 has bookended the whole Brit Pop 2 thing, the whole Franz and friends and foes scene of the last few days. Bands who have the smarts will thrive AFTER scenes and its then that the real grit will be seen. I mean, who thought Blur would go on to make albums like "Think Tank" or have Damon Albarn fronting really interesting stuff like the Gorillaz, that Mali Music album and the Honest Jons label? Will the Monkeys go on to be as involved in as much eclectic stuff as that?

Dont know whether its the end of a scene, n not sure that i really give a s**t what they do after this, but there are some v good tunes on that artic monkeys album. some of the lyrics are spot on.
obviously would like to see what they can do after this, but if not they've planted a few good tunes in the ether, n what more can you really ask for.
