New York is brilliant. I arrive yesterday afternoon and I ask if there is anything good on that night, "Oh, that Devendra Banhart guy you like is playing an instore in the Virgin Megastore on Union Square".

I've been listening to 'Rejoicing in the Hands' non-stop since I interviewed him a few months ago. Bought the album purely on the basis of how crazy he was and it's fantastic. Although my favourite song at the mo of his is 'Now That i Know' from Cripple Crow. Amazing.

Cripple Crow is one my fav albums that I got this year. Playing it on my apartment stereo system is not working out - my flatmates whose forays into alternative stopped at Damien Rice are not at all impressed.
They hate his wife's band Cocorosie's albums even more - Maison de mon reve and Noah's Ark (which I think is better).
Cocorosie are worth checking out.

had a listen to 'now that i know' on itunes - very nick drake-y.
haven't heard enough of his stuff, it definately sounds interesting, but unfortunately i think his vibrato would wreck my head - can't listen to antony and the johnsons for the same reason, shame.

No way! Is the interview up anywhere?
Rejoicing in the hands is super. I was going to get that Nino Rojo one, but I think it's just the last album with a few extra songs, don't know if it's worth it. I went looking for Cripple Crow in HMV the other day, but it says it's not out till the 23rd. Where'd you come across it?

I got my burnt copy a few weeks ago from a friend who bought/got it in the US - not sure why he had it so early - I just presumed it out already.
You can hear Cocorosie's new album in streaming at http://www.tgrec.com/news/detail.php?id=104

Damien - just downloaded a few tracks from Cripple Crow from an mp3 blog a while back, I'll see if I can dig up the links.
The interview was for Alternative Ulster magazine (http://www.alternativeulster.com/magazine.php?article=22) which is a great publication if you can get hold of it.

I just don't get this guy at all.
I've listened to Cripple Crow - it's sprawling, messy, indulgent but it's criminally boring.
He sounds like Marc Bolan. An off form Mark Bolan.
To me Sufjan Stevens and Antony Hegarty are far superior. They have more tunes!

'sprawling, messy, indulgent'; all fantastic qualities.
here is 'Quedate Luna' from Cripple Crow http://www.beggars.com/us/devendrabanhart/QuedateLuna.mp3

you can hear some tunes on this:
http://www.xlrecordings.com/features/devendrabanhart/sampler/index.html
...and yeah i hear the marc bolan thing, but I still think Banhart's awesome. I never really got what the fuss was about, but with Cripple Crow I finally got it. If it's got one flaw I think it's too long/couldn've been pared downa bit, but the good songs (esp Long haired Child!) are pretty great.
