anyone see them last night? Was a really good gig, not sure what i was expecting to be honest, but they were class. Really warm crowd, and the band we're all smiles, pretty sweet. They played a new tune at the end, pure hillbilly or rockabilly or somethinilly, great though.

The crowd was terrible. Especially towards the back they just wouldn't STFU and allow themselves (and others!) to enjoy the music. I can honestly say that I have never heard a more talkative crowd in my whole gig-going life. I mean, we've all seen where bands are ignored and people just keep talking but last night we had the contrast between those there to hear the music and enjoy the gig, and those who felt free to keep chatting to their mates the whole night long. When the music quietened down, it was very audible and as the night went on there was a lot of "shush-ing". I put it down to the thritysomething 5 CDs a year crowd, who toddle along to the likes of Anistasia, Coldplay and maybe a couple of gigs in the Point. While it's good that they are exposed to quality music and a great live act in the Magic Numbers, I just wish they wouldn't treat the gig as an opportunity to catch up on gossip with some background music. Anyhow, the Magic Numbers were very good. Ridiculously talented and Romeo is one gifted songwriter even if that Neil Young vocal impression could get him arrested and thrown in the same cell as Conor Deasy. They even managed to shut up some of the crowd in the second part of the set (insert joke here using the break to run over the road to the chipper).

i was about halfway up n didnt think that the talking was too bad, there was a bit of chatting during some quieter songs, but it didnt really annoy me, to be honest i think people shushing other people can be pretty obnoxious. where i was people were really getting into it, clapping along, and in general very warm and enthusiastic. definitely the most couples i've ever seen at a gig though!

they were pretty good, missed the very start. Dunno bout the lead singer though, when i arrived he was playing bass, n the dude who went on to play bass was playing guitar and singing and that seemed to work way better. (actual lead singer didnt have that great a voice) also the drummer came up n played guitar and sang a tune and the previous guitarist got behind the sticks. Like thats pretty cool n all, but the original drummer was f**king brilliant, and the new guy very average. While it is pretty cool that they have the talent etc to be able to switch around like that, i think they would sound much better if they didnt. must check their site, n see if they have any tunes up, would be interesting to see what they sound like recorded.

they released an EP called 'Don't Get Lost' a while back and it's awesome, seriously. I'm not sure how easy/hard it is to get, but if you can get you're hands on it you're in for a serious treat. I think they put a single out a few months ago on Fierce Panda if you can track it down, don't have it myself.

I made sure to arrive in time to see these guys but ended up missing the start due to the ticket carrier missing a train. However, what I did heart sounded very interesting and has encouraged meto look out for the ep and single. Does anyone have a tracklisting for these? The times culture section had a very positive article on them a few months back saying that they were trying to crack the uk market simultaneous to the irish one.

I saw The Immediate about two years ago, supporting Fair Verona (think it was one of both bands' first gigs) in the Hub. The Immediate impressed me so much, and one of the guys gave me their 'Dont Get Lost EP' (Moneysworth, White Flag Seven Stars, Big Sad Eyes, Prison Song, The Secret) and it's fantastic. I still maintain that they are the best 'new' band in Ireland by a long, long shot. Can't comprehend why they haven't released a record by now...

I'm a bit lost as to why so many people are fawning over the Magic Numbers. They are interesting no doubt but the album never really deviates from the basic template. I'm thinking of a one trick pony with a neat trick.
