Forgot to mention we'll also be playing an Electronic set on the 18th (this Friday) with Max Tundra, Freeform, ourselves, Somadrone, Richie Egan (TRM) and DJ sets in the bar from Matt & Richie and others. It's going to be good aswell as Saturday.

MAX TUNDRA
Max Tundra, a minutely-framed chap also known as Ben Jacobs, has released his second album. No longer with Warp Records, he now moves to Domino, from where he unleashes more of his unique madness upon the unsuspecting Earth. One critic described Max Tundra as someone trying to "make free jazz inside a washing machine... a fast-forward splatter of split-second sound samples, which is quite funny but mostly just insane". It is hard to find fault with this statement when presented with 'Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be'. This is no ordinary record but instead sounds like what would happen if you tried to fit every sound ever into one album, via experimenting with seeing how quickly you can make a sequencer explode.
This is music to engender a veritable plethora of reaction - and it is fair to say that you will either love it or hate it. In one breath he has been described as "a music terrorist" and the album "unlistenable", while in another "it was..... different, like, out there somewhere, like Aphex Twin misbehaving". On a stage, Jacobs is fun to watch as he tootles, strums and hammers his way around a bewildering collection of devices, and while some of the fun of his live shows comes across on this album, it is difficult to hear out in one sitting. But let's face it - if he wanted to be a Simply Red tribute band, rather than produce off-the-wall weirdness - the UK's music scene would have been the poorer for it.
FREEFORM
Simon Pyke - aka Freeform has recently released his sixth album "Audio Tourism". Continuing to push and blur the boundaries between organic/harmonic acoustic sounds and machines he adds a unique travelogue of recordings made during a 3-month journey in China, Vietnam and Hong Kong. This album is the result of two months exploring the backstreets of Vietnam and the Yunnan province, China as Audio Tourists. As 'Tourists' the idea was to source snapshots of life: sounds of the lashing monsoon, the serenity of Lugu Lake, the intense song of cicadas and the chatter of Saigon. Armed with a minidisk, pair of 'in ear' microphones, radio, portable sampler and camera every experience, however small and quiet, was recorded.
Following his debut single on Warp with releases on many influential, underground labels such as Skam, Worm Interface, Language and Chocolate Industries, Freeform?s most recent release was the critically acclaimed Green Park, also released on Quatermass. Famously, Howie B used a chunk of ?Fane? (from the Skam EP) on U2?s number one single, ?Discotheque?.
The CONNECTFOUR ORCHESTRA (C40) (play electro set)
Formed late 1999, the connectfour orchestra (c4o) are a 5 piece instrumental outfit from Dublin, consisting of former members of Palomine, Loretta and some drifter. They have been compared to bands such as Tortoise & Stereolab from their use of Electro, Synths, Guitars and live Drums. They have gradually grown a following from their gigs over the past two years, playing support to the likes of Superchunk, Blonde Redhead & To Rococo Rot to name but a few.
Having released two singles on the Road Relish and Greyslate labels they are currently preparing to record their first album, which is to begin in February.

SOMADRONE
Dublin based Somadrone aka Neil O?Connor will be performing live on the night providing a fusion a sound fluxuating between ambient, electronica & instrumental. In August 2001, Neil released a 10" on Mango Music "Somadrone" & will be introducing new material into his set on the night. Neil is also involved in The Connectfour Orchestra (C40) & but considers his Somadrone act an important solo project.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."
