In my eternal quest to advance my musical landscape I was wondering what you think are some worth while side projects that rival or even surpass the original artists work. My own probably being Death Cab for Cutie / The Postal Service and Blur / Gorillaz. Any recommendations?

Well it's members of The Bad Seeds. And they're currently working on a new album now, which is good news.

oh right... wasnt too sure on that. Speaking of which... have you heard of an Australian band called The Devastations? If you're into Dirty Three and The Bad Seeds you should defo give them a try. A friend of a friend brought them over a while back...unfortunatly I missed them but they were supposed to be amazing. Karen O was working on some tracks with the singer I think.

suppose the question is: were the dirty three around before they joined the bad seeds? - certainly in the case of warren ellis, that's a resounding yes - would need to check on the other 2... maybe the bad seeds are the side project bonnie billy and matt sweeney one is a great album but not sure it fits in here 'cause it's just another will oldham collaboration really... possibly more apt is the upcoming oldham / tortoise covers album looking forward to the iron and wine / calexico get together - that should be fun

I wouldn't say that the three members of Dirty Three use The Bad Seeds as a side project, mainly because they have achieved more success with Nick Cave's band and would be more recognisable to people that way. Mick Turner, Warren Ellis and Jim White also contribute to other side projects like Mick Turner and Tren Brothers. But it is their work with The Bad Seeds that has people aware of them, so I would stick with Dirty Three being their side project (especially since they tour & record more with Nick Cave). I have that Iron & Wine/Calexico Ep. It's entitled 'In The Reins' and is pretty good. It sticks along the familiar Sam Beam route so if you're not a fan of Iron & Wine I wouldn't recommend it. Good call on The Devastations.

i was sorta joking with the bad seeds as a side project but the point remains... although turner has been a bad seed for ages, warren ellis only joined in 2001 and i don't think jim white is even a member - i stand to be corrected... ...i didn't realise that iron & wine ep was out yet - i'll need to look it out... cheers

Another good one to look out for is BRAKES. Made up from members of Tenderfoot, The Electric Soft Parade and that marching drum bashing nut from British Sea Power on vocals. Just released their first full length record Give Blood a few weeks back and I likes it!
