Celebrating Amazon's 10th birthday with a streamed gig, selling his album in Starbucks, advertising Victoria Secret underwear. The man has clearly been abducted by aliens and had a corporate whore chip implanted.

Hmmmm. In fairness, the book is pretty interesting despite being completely all over the map. The Starbucks thing is just wrong. That's for people like Alanis Morrissette to do, not him.

Why the surprise/indignation? Didn't we have this argument in the 90s when he flogged Times they are a changin as the theme music for a US accountancy firm's TV commercial? A Rolling Stone reporter later asked him if he had a 'problem' with such merchandising. "My problems don't lie in those areas," My Zimmermann replied.

I suppose artists tend not to see their own work with the same reverence others accord it. To you and me "Times they are a changing" or "like a rolling sone" might be cultural monoliths, but to Dylan, its probably just another song he wrote and is glad to get paid for. Its usually only the egomaniacs who see their own work as that important. At the same time, the co-opting of well known cultural icons for commercial gain is a bit depressing. The worst one I can think of is that national lottery ad where they use that sequence of Gene Kelly from "singing in the rain", far worse than VWs use of it. When I think about it just makes me sick to my stomach, the thought of using it to promote something so grossly materialistic. i.e. Money will bring you happiness. It kind of goes the spirit of the original piece.

Dylan has always gone against general thinking and concensus but I do wonder what this is all about, given that it seems to be a purely materialistic avenue. That said, should we really be surprised. Didn't Bowie issue a bond against future earnings? I think I even read that there is a Bowie credit card. Perhaps as they get older, some of these guys want to get their money in and decide what they want to do with it rather than leaving it to the family and lawyers. One wonders..

Well in fairness I don't think his family needs the cash. I find this hard to believe but apparently it turns out that his son Jakob's band the Wallflowers have sold more albums than Bob has. Apparently Dylans album sales have never been that high and most of best known records only started shifting units when they were covered by other artists such as Jimi Hendrix, The Byrds and even Guns N Roses.

I love it when dylan fans try to 'explain' that he doesn't do ads/starbucks/etc for the MONEY, oh no!!! it's just to "play with his image"

Dylan is mad for money, he is on a continous never ending tour that brings in millions. I find it hard to believe that the Wallflowers have sold more albums than Bob!

So do I but that's what I heard. For a sense of perspective Van Morrison has sold only ten million albums in his entire career (including his time in Them). LInkin Parks's debut album however sold over 14 million copies.

yeah remember hearing how few albums dylan has sold, i think highway 61 revisited was less than 3 million, compare with say some crappy Oasis album selling 7.

'Thriller' has sold more than all of Dylan's album sales put together. I can't stand the Jakob Dylan's band. They sound like the f**king Seahorses or something. If Dylan wanted to f**k with his image, he should do something cool. I have very little respect for musician's who use their songs to sell another company's product. That goes for Dylan, Jerry Fish, Madonna, Beyonce, U2, Britney, Pink, The Walls, Dandy Warhols, Zutons, and whoever else you want to add to that list of shame. BRING BACK KLF

How many products must a man endorse Before you can call him a whore? How many units must a songwriter shift Before you dont like him anymore? The answer, my friend, is "Blow it out yer arse" The answer is "Blow it out yer arse."
