I know its probably been discussed at length on a number of occassions on this site, but I think after finally getting a decent pc, I might just get myself a MP3 player. Thinking bout an I RIVER what do people recommend here. Cheers, C

I've had an iRiver HP120 for a couple of years now and I've found it to be a great piece of kit. Good functionality and battery life (I get about 15hrs out of mine). It plays MP3, OGG and WMA. But it's the sound quality that makes it stand out to me - I've got a pair of Koss Porta Pro headphones and the sound quality is just delicious. I also know our esteemed editor has an iRiver and might have a view on this for you.

do iRivers have a radio? I want an mp3 player with a radio, i think the Creative Zen has one, but to be honest, I don't know much about mp3 players. I don't really want to get an ipod because of the battery issue, and the fact that everyone has one, and I prefer to give my business to smaller corporations.

It all depends on which iRiver you go for, they do a range of players nowadays. I think most of the hard disk based iRivers have an fm tuner. Theres even a PMP iRiver that plays back videos too.

...oh, and if your like me and prefer a decent set of medium sized headphones, rather than Earphones to go with your player, Maplin have a fantastic set of German made ones for €11.99 (Pro-Luxe PX-921), I've spent 4 times as much on similar headphones from Sony and Phillips, but these ones sound the best, good frequency response, clear sound that isn't clinical or harsh like Sonys tend to be. Although its worth bearing in mind that I use mine through a hi-fi amp, so I don't quite how they'll sound drivrn by a less powerful sound source.

What a ridiculous thing to say. I don't want one because everyone has one. It sits in your pocket, no-one will see it and think "oh my god Una is soooo not like cool anymore, she has an ipod uuuugggghhh" I suggest you get a cool retro walkman mp3 player, then everyone will think you're cool and you'll be hoisted above their shoulders and lauded as the coolest person like ever.

um, nerraw, i kind of just didnt want to get an ipod because everyone has one, yeah, and I'd prefer to see what the best mp3 player out there is and get that instead of going for a fashion accessory like the ipod. FYI, a actually carry a cassette walkman with me sometimes. I wasn't aware that was cool. Then again, I may have failed to care. Rev Jules - I don't buy mp3s from itunes, but is there a phone out there where you can store loads of mp3s?

When it comes to a (hard disk based) MP3 player, I'm a big advocate of the iRiver over the iPod (I have a 40GB H300 series iRiver player, colour screen, FM tuner, in-line recorder, etc, and am very pleased with it). More info on it here: http://www.iriver.com/html/product/prpa_product.asp?pidx=42 The ins and outs of one (iPod) versus the other (iRiver) have indeed been run through several times before on this discussion board. So check out these threads to save us running over the ins and outs one more time: -> http://www.cluas.com/discussion/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3117 (from July 2004) -> http://www.cluas.com/discussion/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3722 (from Nov 2004) eoghan

Yeah several, but none with a hard disk that I'm aware of (though its is surely a matter of time). Get one that has a removeable memory slot for SD cards or similar, you'll be able to carry round up to 1GB on an SD card (SD cards come in various sizes from 32MB upwards), 1GB is enough for a couple of albums at a time, but not really close to what a hard disk based player can offer.

have a 20g ipod and have had it for last 3 years. its now very battered, scratched and overworked but still does what it is supposed to do ie play music. Absolutely NO battery issues with it. ditched the headphones after a few months though because theyre just awful and fiddly and use either Sony or whatever is lying around the house. highly recommend the ipod, especially if u have a Mac (have heard mixed stories about itunes for PCs).

I have an iRiver and I'm very happy with it. I went for the iRiver over the iPod because you can just plug it into any computer without installing any software and drag and drop your music files over to it. It does not alter the files (I believe the iPod does some type of encoding to the music files so you cannot copy them to another computer) so it functions as a perfect backup of your files. I have the iRiver H340.

Not true. Windows media player allows you to do this with an ipod.

Smaller coporations! Small, medium, large, and world-devouring, they're all the same: they have a psychotic obsession on making profits. Apple, Microsoft et al were all 'smaller corporations' once. Hmmm, I fancy a McDonalds for lunch.........

Actaully, all you need do is connect your Pod in disc mode to your PC ( Very Easy ) , change File View on Windows to ' Show hidden files '( Apple hides them on the pod , explore the new drive on your pc and copy all your songs over. I've had to re-format my pc a number of times recently and was still able to xfer all my tunes back from my ipods For me iPods are the leader. They sound and look best. The battery is not really an issue, we all charge our phones overnight as is so just do the same with you pod. iTunes is a fantastic piece of software too. I have 6 times the amount of music on my PC now than on my pod so a good player is vital and iTunes is certainly that!

Hey Punchbowl. I do not charge my phone every night and I would get rid of it if I had to... ;-) The simple fact is that iRiver usually outlasts the iPod battery by a factor of 2 to 1. This makes the iRiver much more "weekend break" friendly. I do believe there are other 20Gb players out there that last longer than the 15hrs or so that I get with my iRiver. I would certainly use battery life as a factor when making a decision.

The 20gb creative zen has great battery life, it lasted me the whole weekend at oxegen, plus it sounds, looks and feels a lot better than the iRiver and iPod in my opinion.
