The Vines are all right. Missy Higgins is a bit unoriginal.

not exactly "current" but some golden oldies that are more kick-ass than a Holden V8 ute: The Avalanches! - absolutely love these guys but wheres that 2nd album already? The Go-Betweens - classic indie pop Also I've heard of a group called Radio Birdman who are supposed to be pretty good, don't know much about these guys but apparently they're a legendary aussie Garage band, similar kind of stuff to The Stooges, sligtly dodgy image though (think Stooges/early Joy division misguided use of fascist imagery) Anyone got anymore info? are they worth checking out further?

All from Melbourne, the mad f**kers!. Yep, their debut album is extraordinary. It came out when I spent a year out there in 2000/2001...no sign of a follow-up, though. But how can you follow that? Another Aussie band I really got into while out there were Something For Kate. You really should check out 'Echolalia'. Brilliant album. The Superjesus, Casey Chambers, The Sleepy Jackson all excellent too... Best Aussie bands ever? AC/DC, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Go-Betweens, Midnight Oil, the latter bands's championing of the aboriginal people's plight in the face of prejudice and general indifference,is really inspiring. Great band.

No, Something for Kate are very different to The Avalanches. They're a Rock band with no beats, bleeps, samples or pieces of deranged dialogue whatsoever! ...Kate have great soaring rock epics with a strong melancholic undertow, great vocalist. Deserve a wider audience. www.somethingforkate.com

My current favourites are Architecture in Helsinki and Cut Copy. My all time favourites would be Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, the Sleepy Jackson and the Avalanches. The Go Betweens have their moments and I'll always have a soft spot for AC/DC if only for Back in Black, ditto INXS for Need You Tonite. The Avalanches split up ages ago by the way.

Why, of course...how could I forget the God-like Slim Dusty and his wonderful ode to the sheer hellishness that must be the 'Pub With No Beer'. Streuth!
