Come to think of it, the SubPop samplers are good too and cost ya buttons as well. Shuggie Otis' "Inspiration Information" is great. It's an album with some extra stuff from previous albums (so I reckon it counts) like "Strawberry Letter 23", an absolute classic.

I got 2 subpops. They're called "The Eagle Is The Most Popular Bird" and (i think) "Taking the Universe One Planet At A Time" or something like that. It's where I first heard the very beautiful "New Slang" by The Shins. Sub Pop, I thank thee.

Couldn't agree more. I had this compilation for a couple of years before ever bought a "proper" Saint Ettienne album. Probably the first non-rock album I ever bought, pure pop perfection. Eventually I bought "Sound of Water" and quickly realised that this bands albums were as good as their singles and have bought pretty much all the albums in their back catalogue (the major releases, not the legion of fan club only, jap import and rare EP stuff). Absolutely fantastic band who seem to be under the commercial and critical radar these days sadly. "Smash the System" is arguably a better one to get for any new Saint Etienne fans who want a "best of" now though.

Yeah, to an extent, in that they're gonna contain lots of good tracks, but I suppose the difference between a good and a really great compilation is the amount of thought put into it. The Chemical Brothers recent singles collection was a little disappointing for example. The U2 best ofs which were split across 2 releases were a wee bit crap too, neither quite doing a good job of compiling all the hits for new fans or the B-Sides for people who had all their albums. Splitting the releases into Hits and B-Sides/rarities rather then Chronologically would have been better.
