I have been watching this RTE archive clips show over the last few weeks and amoung the pleasures so far have been Sandy Kelly's duet with a perplexed Johnny Cash, Glen Hansard wearing a perm, eyeliner and lipstick and Blue in Heaven just doing their thing...Oh and Leslie Dowdall.

Saw last nites Glens perm was just smashing wasnt it!!! funny stuff Kevin kildea on "The Jam"... I loved The Jam so much that i ate Jam Sandwiches Jason Byrne was spot on when talking about that muppet "George Murphy"

I have to say it's one of the worst things on Irish television. It's TV at its laziest. A bunch of pre-Celtic tiger music clips tossed together with no thought or connection and a bunch of "comedians" sitting making obvious remarks. Oh, look how crap we used to be! here's an original comedy conceit! dkie Rock was st! Ho ho ho! Our RTE comedy nights involve this crap and the "success" of a hidden camera show. We're supposed to be a nation of storytellers and natural comedians. We have some of the best stand-up comedians around. And all we can come up with is cheap, unfunny knock-offs of not very funny UK shows. Oh it makes me mad.

I'll agree with some of that, but theres no real harm in taking a wry look at our past every now and then. As for Jason Byrne's comments on George Murphy.... thats probably the only time he's ever likely to make me laugh that hard as I think he's s**t but he was funny and spot on with what he said last night.... hahaha

Ignoring the "packaging" of smug comedians and quips which I'm not above laughing at, the actual clips themselves are fascinating stuff, the Johnny Cash footage Jules mentioned, dozens of forgotten bands doing their thing on the late late show and even the cheesy showband stuff show how the collective memory of Irish musics past has become sanitised, distorted and neatly compartmentalised into Tom Dunne compilation sized chunks in the public conciousness. Goes to show, things are generally a lot less clear cut than perceived musical wisdom states.
