See there's another top 100 poll on C4 sunday nite: 100 Greatest albums.
These polls always bring up the same aul chestnuts, claiming Bohemian Rhapsody is the best song ever, closely followed by Angels or piffling nonsense.
What do people think the great british public will choose as best album? (Unless it's based on sales.) It's a bit harder to predict I think.
Sgt.Pepper? What's The Story...? Spiceworld?

I saw the results on the web a few days ago (I presume its the same poll) the results were exactly what you would expect from a general public poll, ie Robbie Williams et al featuring quite prominently
I think these polls are an absolute waste of time, they should get music critics, record people, musicians etc to provide the input, it would lead to a much more objective poll, and reduce the amount of unproven/riding on a wave at the moment bands,
either that or its about time we took the "do not use in shower" signs off hair dryers and thinned out the gene pool

Is it the public who vote or critics or just blind polls?

OK Computer? Surprising! Wouldn't have predicted the British public would choose it.
A silly poll obviously. I doubt it was entirely public opinion though. I know lots of people love Aretha Franklin but I'd be surprised if the majority of people could name an Aretha album. Elvis' only entry was The Sun Sessions, a compilation from '75. Same deal.

Could we expect a different outcome if it was the Irish public? Is our taste marginally/wholly better/worse?

nope.
these polls dont mean anything. There is no 'greatest album'. It's only collective opinion.

I don't know how anyone or collective could pick the top album of all time. I mean, my top 10 changes all the time, and so does my no.1 album. Needless to say, hardly any of my favourite albums were in this 100 so called greatest albums.

i thought it was a far better poll than any i've seen in my time. granted some awfull entries (dido, alanis morisete) but what can ye do. i enjoyed the 4 hours though, better than watching the usual sunday evening tripe.
also the poll was based on a short list of albums, 200 or so. hence there was a bit of quality control so to say. at least there was no britney, x-tina, spice girls et all!

Didn't know bout the 200 short list, makes more sense now. Alanis in the top 20 was ludicrous though! A more credible poll than top 100 singles anyway.

I reckon as whole the people of our country have far worse music taste than our neighbors across the water. It's no surprise really. Over there they've got better bands, better clubs, better venues, more quality acts visiting their shores, better DJs, better music shops, better festival line ups, better music magazines, better radio station, better music in their charts. And the fact that they've got a much larger and ethnically diverse population means that they can support countless different music scenes simultaneously. Face it; the odds are just stacked in their favor.

I think it can be simplified to the fact that England is a bigger country with a bigger economy and more media organistaions that have been successful for decades.

that is incorrect.
jeff buckley can only ever be under-rated because no-one will ever see him reach his peak.
