Those of y'all who got today's Sunday Times may have read an article in the Culture section about the country songwriter Mary Gauthier who is supporting Willie Nelson when he plays Dublin later this year. I strongly recommended that if you want to hear what first class songs actually sound like on an acoustic guitar that you check out some of her albums. Dixie Kitchen (my fav) Drag Queens in Limousines Filth and Fire She didn't write her first song until she was 35 and was the oldest performer in the Open Mics she cut her teeth in by nearly two decades. And has built her career by living true to Townes Van Zandt's dictum that what the world needs are great songs, and not the merely good.

Check out her latest Mercy Now. Excellent - Mercy Now and I drink are fantastic songs. Don't have Dixie kitchen but have other 2. Saw her supporting Willie - her voice seemed much sweeter and clearer live than on album - maybe I was just reacting to the people sitting behind me - I had been raving about her to my friends who were going with me beforehand and they stayed drinking in the bar instead of coming in to watch her. So while sitting on my own the guy behind me (stereotypical Cn'W set) said "pity they didn't get someone a livlier - Daniel O Donnell would've been much better than this - he won't mind supporting a star like Willie".

I thought her set was pretty weak; playing songs that were too long and dull. She has talent but didn't prove to be an exciting support act on the Saturday night.

No, wasn't a great set. To be fair, she didn't play songs such as 'You're all I wanna do'.
