Given the speed with which download sites like i-Tunes have destroyed the small independent record shop business, High Fidelity is increasingly looking like a work of historical fiction...a kind of Marcel Proust's 'A la recherche du temps perdu' for musos.

I'd go for b******t! She doesn't have a notion what she's going on about it. Listen to this quote "But seriously, men hate John Cusack. Especially men of the indie-rock ilk." I know countless "men of the indie rock ilk" who are huge fans of Cusack's work, especially the likes of High Fidelity, Being John Malkovich, Grosse Pointe Blank and The Sure Thing. Her article is littered with typical immature girly tripe. John was an assh*le to my friend so I hate him, so everyone else must hate him as well. Get over yourself girl.

It's a pretty dreadful piece. It had the ability to transform into something interesting but he strayed off to a slip road of bitchyness, John Cusack-bashing, disregard for men who passionately love music and forgetting what points she is trying to make. Not all men hate John Cusack, not all men like him either. And not all men who like him in 'High Fidelity' like him in 'Say Anything'.
She skips all over the place, like in the paragraph when she is discussing the first introduction of record store Championship Vinyl, she writes it like a commentary. But she jumps from the scene of Barry playing his loud music to another scene (where they discuss top five lists) which doesn't happen until later in the film. Another thing she keeps doing throughout is involving her own opinion(s); which in turn, transforms it into a glossy tabloid 'Dear Deirdre' type coloumn. She writes - ' Hey lady—you are gonna miss me! Yeah, we are so going to miss your insularity and your arrested development. No we aren’t; we are going to be alright. And you will go back to living in your world grounded not in musical fetish, but pathos. And you will be pretty f**king far from alright. ' but what she fails to realise is that Laura misses Rob, his geeky ways and eventually goes back to him (sorry if that is a plot spoiler to anyone). Maybe she should have read the book and watched the film AGAIN before writing the piece. Overall, very poor.

Another thing I forgot to mention was that she rarely mentioned Nick Hornby, author of the book. About Hornby though, he has just been disgraced by a remake of 'Fever Pitch' with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon. Anyone who is a fan of Hornby will know of 'Fever Pitch' and everything it stood for, in terms of Arsenal and football. Not baseball!!!!

"and to be fair, he is a tit"
i don't agree with the article, and moreover, its annoyingly written.
high fidelity is a good film. its sharp, it has some nice romance, a smart assed delivery that is both irritating and endearing. not the best film ever made, but worth watching.

Sorry Gar, but that sounds quite good. You see, baseball is to me what football is to you. Watching Roger Clemens of The Astros smear Barry Bonds live in Minute Maid Park, Houston TX, in April last year was one of the magic spectator moments of my life.

Ok, fair enough but it just feels like betrayal in a way. I'm a big Arsenal fan, a big Hornby fan and a huge football fan so I relate to the text (and to the film with Colin Firth). The new version just looks very cheesy and a cheap rip off. But I didn't mean to attack the sport of baseball.

Oh no, you didn't.
Yeah, it does look cheesy but, hey, taking Drew Barrymore out to the old ball game. Nice !

Baseball, Football, whatever. Aren't movies about sports (with one or two noteable exceptions) generally crap anyway? (yes I do realise that a movie about boxing has just won the oscar) Even motorsport movies which you'd think that would at least work on action level, what with car chases being hollywoods stock-in-trade are usually dull and forgettable.

yes, but when they're good, i have to say i love movies about sports - like 'any given sunday' and 'ali' - brilliant. anybody see an ice-hockey movie with paul newman called 'slap-shot'? some of the best fight scenes ever committed to celluloid!

Eh, respecfully beg to differ.
Here are a few sports based movies that would not be, in my opinion, crapola.
Tin Cup (Golf)
Bull Durham (Baseball)
Field of Dreams (Baseball)
The Rookie (Baseball)
Rocky (Boxing)
Raging Bull (Boxing)
Ali (Boxing)
Any Given Sunday (American Football)
Jerry Maguire (American Football)
Slap Shot (Ice Hockey)
The Killing (Horse Racing)
Le Mans (Car Racing)

"Le Mans" is great as is John Frankenheimers groundbreaking "Grand Prix" (among the first to use in car cameras and film at REAL speeds, Bullitt eat yer heart out) but I didn't think they would have much to hold the attention of those with little interest in the sport (I'm a car nut so can't be objective here). And thats it, pretty much two decent movies about motorsport in the last 40 years! "Days of Thunder"? "Driven"? (Silvester Stallones attempt at making Rocky does CART), "Fast and Furious"? oh God! the horror! all depressingly dull.
Like I said, a couple of noteable exceptions. I despise boxing, yet "Rocky" is a genuinely watchable film with a great script. I'm not entirely convinced by the supposed merits of "Raging Bull". "Field of Dreams"? eh, you're kidding right?
I'll defintely admit that there are quite a few sports movies worth watching. the beautifully shot horse racing movie "Seabiscuit" is worth a mention but I just think theres more duds and movies that are just about OK in the sports genre than genuinely great ones.

To be fair, most movies are duds, regardless of genre.
Yes, I will proffer that I have a soft spot for 'Field of Dreams'
If you are into cars and the movie captures that for you, then its a good flick, non ?
'Seabiscuit', forgot about that because I didn't see it. Suppose we had better include 'National Velvet' so.

'John Cusack is a tit'...'Explain why guys do the silly things they do'??????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a wonderful piece of journalism. The piece was filled with un biased empirical facts. And what an apt title. A 'Critique'.
I would question if miss 'i've a signed copy of the book' could tell me what a critique indeed is.
John Cusack plays a similar character in most movies. Granted. However there are far more obnoxious annoyin actors who are far worse. Ben Stiller anyone???? Cusacks character is that of the regular guy. He's not the nerd. He's not the Jock. He's not handsome yet he's not ugly either. He doesn't get the deadly girl, he gets the average one. The man didn't make a bad movie until america's sweethearts and its been all downhill from there!!!
Now... The silly things guys do?? Words almost escape me in retort to this. A long list of profanities wouldn't even go far enough to express my utter disgust at this statement. How condesending can you be? She's alienated half the readers with this one statement. Not a smart move. people look for holes in her - and this use this word sarcastically and in its loosist sense - 'critique'straight away. At least put at the end you idiot!!!! Don't get me started on the 'sex and the city' americanised 'that is soooo' or 'what-everrrr' attitude the fairer gender have today. Silly things guys do? Have ye listened to yourselves speak lately??? what a brilliant piece of satire 'clueless' was... And what a sound track!!!
A poorly structured, poorly written, un-informed and downright insulting piece of writing. She's either really smart - ie. trying to stir sh*t, which she's successfully achieved - or dumb enough to believe she's correct.
