To Coincide with the release of The Futureheads' version of Hounds Of Love (probably my favourite track of the year so far) one of the writers for The Culture supplement of The Sunday times compiled his top ten covers of all time yesterday;
01 Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
02 Scissor Sisters: Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
03 The Wedding Present: Make Me Smile (Cockney Rebel)
04 Patti Smith: Gloria (Them)
05 Ryan Adams: Wonderwall (Oasis)
06 The Futureheads: Hounds of Love (Kate Bush)
07 Jeff Buckley: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
08 Johnny Cash: One (U2)
09 Bryan Ferry: The “In” Crowd (Dobie Gray)
10 Tori Amos: 97 Bonnie & Clyde (Eminem)
Skimming through my record collection I stumbled across another 30 covers which I reckon are also worth a mention;
Spanky Wilson: Sunshine Of Your Love (Cream)
Elliott Smith: Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks)
TV On The Radio: Mister Grieves (The Pixies)
Soulwax: Starfish & Coffee (Prince)
The Slits: Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
The Clash: I Fought The Law (Bobby Fuller)
The Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly)
The Kingsmen: Louie Louie (Richard Berry)
Nina Simone: Here Comes The Sun (The Beatles)
Madness: One Step Beyond (Prince Buster)
The Sonics: Have Love Will Travel (Richard Berry)

David Bowie: Don't Bring Me Down (The Pretty Things)
Dusty Springfield: Love Power (The Sandpebbles)
Aretha Franklin: Respect (Otis Redding)
The Ramones: Baby I Love You (The Ronnettes)
Schneider TM: The Light 3000 (The Smiths)
Johnny Cash: Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
The Happy Mondays: Step On (John Kongos)
Beck: Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime (The Korgis)
Sonic Youth: Superstar (The Carpenters)
Cake: I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
William Shatner: Common People (Pulp)
The White Stripes: Stop Breaking Down (Robert Johnson)
Johnny Jones & the King Casuals: Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
Ella Fitzgerald: Get Ready (Smokey Robinson)
Ellen McIlwaine: Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)
Shinehead: Billie Jean (Micheal Jackson)
Nouvelle Vague: Just Can't Get Enough (Depeche Mode)
Marie "Queenie" Lyons: Fever (Peggy Lee)
Does anybody else want to add anything to the list?

The whole concept behind those records might be a bit iffy, but Juliet Turners cover of Britney Spears "Toxic" is brill, though just short of true greatness. Its a brilliant song that just needed someone with a decent voice (as opposed to Britneys pathetically weak delivery) to make it come alive. Now all we need is to persuade Juliet to leave that security blanket acoustic guitar at home and hook her up with Ms. Spears production team to create a nugget of pure poptastic gold.
Personally I also reckon you folks need less of "The Culture" and more Culturedeluxe.

Testify sweetie. Lee Ranaldo's cut of Dylan's Visions of Johanna was the best zimmy cover I've heard in years. Ditto Hamell on Trial on It's Alright Ma - on the same cd.
And continuing the theme, Them's take on It's All Over Now Baby Blue is sublime (and sampled to bloody death).

I have to second that recommendation for http://www.culturedeluxe.com/
I have downloaded a lot of great tracks from it over the years. One of my faves is a mix of billie jean and stayin alive that kicks ass.
Would love to be able to mash-up tracks like some of those guys.

I love that tune but sampled to death? I've only heard it been used once when Beck sampled it on Jack-ass. Has someone else sampled it as well?
With regards to www.culturedeluxe.com it's alright but it seems seriously out of date. I'd reccommend www.gybo-v3.co.uk
You don't get the same amount of decent bootlegs as you used to when the likes of Erol Alakan and 2 Many DJs were making them but never the less here's the top 10 booties that I've been playing in my hip hop sets for the last 18 months or so (with audio clips as well!)

On a seperate note I've been toying with the idea of making a bootleg album by juxtaposing Irish Rock/Indie tracks with US hip-hop accapellas. Eg. looping up Heyday by Mic Christopher and putting 50 Cents In The Club accapella over the top of it what do you think?
By the way some of ye might like this. I still haven't decided if I love it or hate it;
Franz Ferdinand vs Outkast

GYBO is good too (for the uninitiated: Get Your Bootleg On forum, named after the much overused Missy Elliot track), but not as user friendly I find, you gotta wade through the posts to find the bootlegs. A good place to go if you want learn about creating mashups though. My fave bootleg site used to be www.bastardpop.co.uk but that closed ages ago and of course www.boomselection.info is still the daddy. Theres no denying that bootleg/mshup culture is well past its best, but no one expected it to last in terms of maintaining its creative energy. It was fun while it lasted and I think people will look back in hindsight and realise that bootlegging and Electroclash were the punk revolution of our generation. I still download loads of bootlegs, but its much rarer that I find one that really excites me these days. Even Culturedeluxe now features many tracks that aren't bootlegs.
Like you said, many of the former leading lights of the genre while still dropping the odd bootleg have moved on. Freelance Hellraiser is doing commercial remixes, Soulwax have gone back to being Soulwax and released a slightly disappointing "band" album, Erol Alkan never limited himself to bootlegs in the first place, Dsico and Eve Massacre have released albums of original material. Then theres The Avalanches, who while not seen as part of the bootleg craze, were probably responsible for inspiring a lot of it. No-one seems to know if they will ever release another record.
As for putting together bootlegs featuring Irish indie bands, I'm just suprised no one seems to have done it yet. You'd have thought there was at least one opportunistic bootlegger in the country. I'd say go for it as its not really been done before, but don't even THINK about using 50 cent, that track has been used to death. Make a bootleg album, don't bother trying to release it commercially, just get it out on the web (might be able to help you there, drop me an email using my Cluas member profile) Keep Bastardpop free!

What about the x*rox Soundsystem, i.e. the Dublin duo Dethboyear and Speaker Treatz. They've had their booties played on XFM and MTV Mash. Check out http://xerox003.valuehost.co.uk
They've got a couple of mixes here as well;
http://www.backlash.ie/mixes.html
Also Cian and Cyril from 110th Street have knocked out a few in their time. You can check them out in the mixes section of http://www.queeporganicmusic.com
I quite like the bit on the Fast 'n' Bulbous mix where they Throw the Beck accapella over Primal Scream.

Its not that I didn't think there were any Irish bootleggers (thanks for the links anyway by the way), its just that I'm suprised no-one has been opportunistic and just thought "you know, a bootleg featuring The Frames would probably go down really well" (maybe they have, I just haven't heard it).
I'd reccomend starting with the track "Fighting on the Stairs" from the "For the Birds" album. Its practically got a 4/4 house beat going on under there! Its a pity The Frames didn't evolve this idea, we could have been looking at new sub-genre of uniquely Irish dance music: Acoustic House

I quite like cover that The Fall do of Sister Sledges' "Lost in Music". Mark E. Smith sounds completely trashed, but its great fun.

Tom Middleton's just compiled a double CD of unusual cover versions. You can listen to 1 minute MP3 samples of all the tracks here; http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/178682-02.htm
It's got two of my all time favourite covers on it;
Spanky Wilson: Sunshine Of Your Love (Track 20 on CD1) and
Nina Simone: Here Comes The Sun (Track 1 on CD2)
It's got loads of great covers I've never heard before and some ones that I'd forgotten about, like that great punk cover of Daft Punk by Uminski.
Anyway it's well worth checking out.
