I just got my limit extended on my credit card so I thought I'd do a little bit of shopping on an American site called www.alternativemusic.com (Although I actually placed the order through www.musicstack.com). Look what I managed to pick up for less than €200; Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out CD sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan CD The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? CD Simple Kid - 1 CD The Shins - Oh, Inverted World CD William Shatner - Has Been CD Joanna Newsom - Milk Eyed Minder CD Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica CD (remastered With 4 Bonus Tracks) Iron And Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days CD British Sea Power - The Decline Of CD (US Version With 2 Bonus Tracks) Guided By Voices - Human Amusements At Hourly Rates CD Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (with Bonus 7 Inch) Bright Eyes - Digital Ash In A Digital Urn CD (with Bonus 7 Inch) The Beatles - Help CD Devendra Banhart - Black Babies CD Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism CD Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman I'm A Machine CD Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane (3 Cd Box Set) Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot 7" single That's 17 brand new CD's (none of which I could find for a reasonable price over here), a triple CD single box set and a Higly limited 7 inch single that's changing hands for over 50 quid on ebay all delivered to my door for the grand total of €192.41. Excluding the box set and the 7" that's less than €11 a CD. The shops in this country are making fools out of us.

Stroller, Don't catch yer chickens before they're hatched, but if it is shipping from the US and the merchant declared (on the green customs declaration sticker they are obliged to put on the package) a total value of goods greater than 40 or so dollars (the threshold above which import duties must be paid) then you'll almost definitely get hit for import duties by the Irish Custom'n'Excise fellas. That could add another 80 or so Euros (if not a lot more) on top of what you have paid so far. If my understanding is correct you will have to pay this extra amount to the Irish govt before they'll release it to the An Post lads for delivery to your gaff. I hope I am wrong but if I were you I'd brace yourself for a surprise. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but buying CDs and stuff from the US is not always as attractive as it appears at a first glance. eoghan

Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out CD Not heard it but I usually like them sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan CD 12 *'s Simple Kid - 1 CD It's shocking to me that you can get an album by a Irish guy so cheap abroad and we pay over the odds for it here, it's very good by the way. The Shins - Oh, Inverted World CD Top class stuff William Shatner - Has Been CD Fun ... for a while Joanna Newsom - Milk Eyed Minder CD She's amazing Iron And Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days CD I prefer the creek drank the cradle but this is very good also. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (with Bonus 7 Inch) Kinda OKish Bright Eyes - Digital Ash In A Digital Urn CD (with Bonus 7 Inch) Not impressed by this, Postal Service do Emotronica better The Beatles - Help CD Who? Devendra Banhart - Black Babies CD Not heard this but I like his other stuff Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane (3 Cd Box Set) I really need to check these guys out as I've liked everything of theris that I've heard. In other words ... you've bought some really great stuff, happy listening.

Well this will be the 4th time that I've ordered over €100's worth of CD's/Vinyl from the States and I've only been stung by customs once before. In that case it was a €40 charge on a box of records that cost me more than €300. So it still wotked out far cheaper then buying them here. Even if they hit me for €40 again that's still only €13 a CD.
