Hi All, I visit Cluas on a daily basis and think as a forum its pretty laid back and generally people here are really well informed and have, for the most part a lot of constructive things to say. Its with this in mind that I thought I would invite you guys to consider making some contributions to a magazine GigSmart is planning on publishing on a regular basis. Our intention is to try and publish a magazine every two months if possible and distribute it Nationwide. We are trying not to bite off more than we can chew as a lot of other ventures of similar aspirations have gone down the pan, difference here is we have a little more in the background to try and sustain the venture (ehh hopefully haha). Before I go on I would just like to say that this publication will be part of the bigger GigSmart picture of trying to bring some additional focus on upcoming bands and its intent is to support the bands that gig, tour and release with GigSmart and who contribute to GigSmart and other bands affiliated with us. All other content will be secondary to that but it is our intention to cover other mainstream and cultural areas which is where we are looking for contributions. Having said all of that we make, big efforts to be as inclusive as possible and are always looking to include people with enthusiasm and who are prepared to do a little more than promote themselves, so please don’t think this is about exclusive GigSmart clique – ism, you want to be involved at any level let us know its pretty simple. (Bands usually complain about coming to us and getting nothing - If your in band and you want to get involved meet us at a gig) I don’t want to come across as some kind of pompous s**te here but we have our own agenda and believe people will get out what they put in. GigSmart was founded initially as a band co-op and through various reasons we have had to register as a company, however the core philosophy is the same. People contribute, turn up to gigs, make an effort to support bands and all boats rise together kind of thing. Needless to say this is a lofty ideal and in practice is hard to achieve, aware of that after thrre year however this kind of approach of focussing on what people do rather than what they don’t has worked well. This year our plan is to possibly release more singles and an album here and there if the right bands come along and are interested in working with us. We are also doing another compilation and a few more nationwide tours, our new website will be going up soon with a full team in the background and we have our regular gig schedule already started, also plans for more outdoor gigs at the central bank as they did well last year….We are hoping to tie all these things together to create a little vibe of sustainability about the whole thing so people become a little more interested in supporting some of the talented unsigned bands gigging around at the moment as they will see, read and hear about these bands regularly through the different formats of night time gigs , day gigs , the tours, the site, the compilation, the mag etc. We are also hoping to attract a little advertising too so we can put the cash into the whole effort and do some promo in the mainstream media aswell to try and encourage people to get back into gigs, it should be an eventful year and we’ll see how it goes. Much like last year we anticipate monumental f**k ups here and there but we are all still learning. So if you have managed to get through all of that and you feel you have something of a slight interest in getting involved in our publication on a regular basis or an ad hoc kinda thing please give me a shout. This is a voluntary effort so we cant pay you, we will just be looking to cover costs so its not gonna make anyone rich with a little luck though it might help a few people along their way. All the best and thanks for reading trev@gigsmartireland.com niall@gigsmartireland.com

what exactly would you be looking for in reference to the magazine? Contributors of articles, interviews ... that kind of thing?

Well some people have offered to cover specific areas already on a regular basis such as movie reviews etc but I would like to see things like perhaps music industry articles that would be of interest to musicians and people with an ear to the ground aswell ....examples would include Arts council funding to local musicians? Access to the nations airwaves, exactly who pays the piper? Initiatives to support and encourage bands/musicians The rise of the collectives (there are loads now) The effect of the internet on local music. Whats happening outside Dublin? Gigs up north? Gettin your band to the UK Contacting labels Just examples off the top of my head. Without being over the top about it anyone can review an album , movie or gig to an extent I would like to see some research pieces done .... a little snooping into the under belly if you will?

Thanks for the support , its not the first time something like this has been tried and Im sure there will be plenty more, the time seems right for us to do it and hopefully we dont make a balls of it ;-). I think we have things well prepared and have all the other things in place that will feed into the mag both from a content point of veiw and an interest in the thing from bands aswell .....we play the gig , we get reviewed , oh look there we are in the mag on site whatever....people who go to the gigs will read the review and give out and get on the site and so on and so on ...Its a plan anyway , and I reckon there are enough quality bands around to cover and make covering and taking an interest in actually worthwhile from a completely nuetral perspective ....I guess its about winning people over....thats the hard bit! We'll see , no doubt we'll take the usual kickin but its gonna be fun aswell

To be perfectly honest, I cant see anything entirely original in what we propose to do. The first issue will document what was done by GigSmart last year.....so yes the first one will primarily be a propagandist publication;) documenting our evil meddling ways. Further issues will cover relevant GigSmart activities that we wish to promote, yes this is the agenda , this is a GigSmart publication....It will also cover non gigsmart issues, gigs , events of relevance to young bands and people who go to gigs buy irish musci etc etc.....its reason to be is to help us promote bands we work with though, so take from that what you will. We are looking for people outside GigSmart to balance the thing a little. We are not making any grand claims at this point and we are open to suggestions, right now we see a requirement to generate some additional coverage for bands we support as we dont feel there is enough coverage available to us. Much like the singles where no one else would release em, we've decided, feck this we'll do it ourselves. I think we can make a success of it and with the support we seem to get at the moment I think its the right time to give it a go like I said The only thing perhaps somewhat different than other ventures of this type is that it will have all the other activities that GigSmart is involved in driving it so to speak giving it a fighting chance to survive as it will be supported by the people it will be covering. I guess its giving people a vested interest in it to a degree. Having said that it is possible it will flop and we loose our asses again!.

By the by theres no such thing as a GigSmart Band.....bands, last time we checked made their own decisions to get involved, if a band wants to get involved at various levels they can, despite the rumours there are no secret handshakes involved ...I see what your getting at though ........all bands will get coverage.

i think you know what i mean about 'gigsmart' bands. some bands would be identified as such. anyway, do you think non-gigsmart people will buy the magazine?

I dont know, I suspect not to start off with I guess we'll find out>? I am conscious of the fact that there is a perception of "gigsmart people" and "gigsmart bands" ...intention is not to railroad or brainwash people into our way of thinking its to win them over by demonsatrating we help worthwhile bands that they might be interested in and provide exposure to these "GigSmart bands" This year more "new bands" will gig with us than bands who have previously done so in the last 3 years, GigSmart is constantly evovling, we see that and we are happy to work with anyone who wants to work with us. I think in the past we have been a little foolish arguing with people who just dont want to be involved or have criticised us. I guess there is very little we can do about perceptions that people have, rather than waste time with that we will focus on developing, more people get involved daily providing something worth their while investing their time in is where our heads are at, the mag is one part of a bigger plan. Anyway I wont ramble on , I dont want to get drawn into a debate or whatever, we have an idea this is it, its very simple, people like it or they dont, we will give it a bash and see what happens. thats cool, i'm just wondering thats all. i just think that for a magazine to come into exsistence with such a small and specific target audience (ie young beginning bands and people who like to listen to young beginner bands) it will be difficult. i wish you all the best with it, and i could help if you'd like.

Cheers, I understand you are just enquiring, I dont wanna monopolise the board and that and am conscious that this is a Cluas board not a Gigsmart broadcast opportunity. Thanks for your feedback ! Trev

btw - I think theres more to gigsmart than 'young beginning bands and people who like to listen to young beginner bands" - though that would be an element
