Not trying to heap pressure on any particular bands or anything and I hope this doesn't achieve that aim. But as well as 'tipped for 2005' is it now or never for any act in '05?

maybe bellx1? i think they are a fantastic band personally, but i reckon as far as major label releases internationally this will probs be a make or break year for them. they'll always have their irsh fanbase like the frames and turn have lived off for so long though. rumour has it the new album is amazing so doubt it'll be a problem anyhow.

I hear that they have a couple of songs about to be played on that american sitcom the O.C. as well, and that the tracks will be on the soundtrack. I think they are a great band and i cant remember the amount of times ive seen these guys I would personally mention "the things"... i think the retro music will run its course soon enough and they have a limited time frame to take advantage of it.

It might be the last chance for Turn. I think Bell X1 and The Frames will still be around even if they don't fully crack America. The 66E's success will depend on how good their album is (according to Mick, its great so i'm looking forward to it) and how well they are recieved in the media. Don't think it is a make or break year for them though seeing as though they are only releasing their debut album.

I think Damien Rice will either go supernova in America or will burn out. I feel it depends on whether he gets the nod from Oscar or not. Not only that but he needs to deliver another long play which hits the target commercially because, at this stage, every organic coffee shop which wants a copy of 'O' probably now has one.

I don't know if Blowers Daughter is eligable for the Oscar, isn't the category "best original song in a motion picture" or some s**t like that. I interviewed Paul Noonan from Bell X1 a few months ago and he said that they've built their own studio now so regardless of what involvment they have with a label they'll always be able to make music but I do think that the new album could well be a critical release for them in terms of breaking outside this country and I reckon that they've got a song called "Flame" that will be a their breakthrough UK single. The O.C. exposure should do wonders for them in the states, I just hope one of the songs isn't the horrible Eve remix. In terms of make or break internationally ... Glen Hansard is 34, Burn The Maps (out internationally in the second week of feb, pitchfork has always been nice to them but it's gained so much more influence since the last album came out, thats a review I'll be interested in reading) has got to be his last shot at making it big abroad, unless he starts taking a backseat and the prettier Joe Doyle becomes more prominent in photos.

And I don;t really care for Turn but I don't think that 2005 is their last chance, they just signed a shiny new international record contract.

From the Friction PR newsletter: After a wealth of negotiating Turn have signed a world-wide record deal with Setanta Records. With a whole boxful of new songs ready for the off the band will be concentrating on preparing to record their 3rd album very soon with a view to a release in the summer.

Can't believe Turn signed to Setanta Records - not exactly a huge label but congrats to them anyway.

I don't think you can say it's now or never for anyone..I don't think that's fair. Music shouldn't have a time frame...it's putting people/bands into boxes that suffocates the music industry. The Frames, as much as it kills me to say, are probably going to be around forever (in some shape or form)....look at the likes of Sack..they are going years (and I mean Years!). They've had some success on the home front and had some lucky breaks touring with Morrissey etc. yet they haven't 'broke' into the mainstream market adn don't make money out of what they are doing..yet they still play, make records and tour...cos they love what they do. I'm not a particular fan of their music but I've a lot of respect for that. Obviously if you all hate each other adn hate the songs you're playing then you should call it a day (among other reasons) but 'time frames' are relative to individual bands - you can't say..."this band will have to make it this year or else that's it.." 'Retro' music....? Do you mean rock'n'roll, blues, punk? Is that not what's flooding the airwaves at the moment? Genres of music move in swings and roundabouts, sure, but there will always be some folk listening to dance whether it's in 'fashion' or not, alwys some listening to punk and rock and roll so on.... Good music should stand the test of time I suppose is what I'm saying is what I'm saying...lol....and shouldn't have an expiry date attached!

Excellent post Dromed, couldn't agree more. Even if it is only because I'm the wrong side of 40 myself.

totally agree with droomed there. the smiths were signed almost straight away, while oasis took 4 years to get signed. it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time

How do you measure making it? Perhaps some of those bands we've mentioned feel they've already done/are doing what they wanted to do.
