I was watching the Golden Globes earlier tonight and as Clive Owen made his way to the podium I heard a faint, warbling sound familiar to all at Cluas...Damien Rice. His song 'Blowers Daughter' is being used as the main theme for Mike Nichols' movie 'Closer'. So, my challenge is, gaze into your crystal balls and divine the nominees for the 77th Annual Academy Awards in the categories 'Music - Best Original Song / Best Original Score' and the eventual winners. Your starter for ten... 'The Blowers Daughter' - Damien Rice (authors note: The score for Mike Nichol's film, 'The Graduate', won a Grammy for Dave Grusin and Paul Simon in 1969, but was not even nominated in the 1968 Oscars for either best song or best score) And here is what I hope and think will win... 'Ray' - Ray Charles / Craig Armstrong By the way, I am delighted that Steve Earle has been nominated for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for 47th Annual Grammy Awards. Especially since he is in the same category as his hero (and mine) Bruce Springsteen. Imagine his speech if he wins ! And for no particular reason, here are some Grammy nominated Country songs & performances which have been favs of mine over the last year. "Redneck Woman," Gretchen Wilson "You Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl," Brooks & Dunn "Hey Good Lookin'," Jimmy Buffett, Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith & George Strait "Coat of Many Colors," Shania Twain with Alison Krauss & Union Station

I agree though, the songs from Team America are way better than anything Damien Rice could come up with.

Well, as I logged onto Oscar.com this morning to view the nominees, I breathed a sign of relief - Damien Rice is nowhere to be seen. Whew! Even better, Counting Crows have picked up a nod for their song 'Accidentlly In Love' (Shrek 2). The following is the full list... I never expected it to be nominated (It's probably not even eligible) but one of my favourite songs on a movie soundtrack in the last year was Beck's cover of Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It gets me every time.

Very surprised that the soundtrack to 'Ray' didn't make it onto the list. The film was a fine salute to the man and thought that an Oscar would maybe have topped it all off. Hopefully Jamie Foxx will walk off with Best Actor instead.
