OK, I know its cheesy, so theres no need to point it out, but I was just wondering if anyone else managed to to watch "You're a star" on RTE last night, where in a break from the usual karaoke queens and people with untuned acoustic guitars they had a show dedicated exclusively to bands.
What did you all think? and how do you think it reflects on the current Irish music scene? Any bands stand out for you? (other than the very spinal tap celtic rock band doing Abbas "dancing queen"!)

I thought the celtic band were great and they would go down a treat with the scandanavians and eastern europeans. All they need is a cheezy song.
Dave's radio stood out for me, hes a good front man and has an unusal voice. I thought the rest of the bands were very ordinary.

I watched bits and pieces of it during breaks in the Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle, the Celtic band were great in a really awfull kind of way, we should send them to the Eurovision.
What I didn't get was Dave Fanning and Hazel Kaneswarren and the other one (who the hell is she and what has she done?) saying that bands "weren't Eurovision", I thought that was the point of getting Fanning in there; and they sent "Eurovision Chris Doran" out there last year and look how he did.

Barbara Galavan. She used to be a big cheese in U2's organisation.

Still is - looks after all their publishing and the Riverdance publishing.
How can anyone take this show seriously? Its like that old variety show The Good Old Days updted for the mobile phone generation. Dave Fanning has lost any lingering respect I had for him by taking part in this. Shows like this produce MOR acts which go on to be the showbands of tomorrrow.

Why would you lose respect for Fanning after this, not to mention a lot of the truly awful TV stuff he's done on TV over the years (oh the stuff you could dig out of the RTE vaults). I mean first of all it shows that he doesn't take himself or life too seriously. Second, can you blame they guy for taking a nice paycheck? After all, even John Peel used to do dodgy voiceovers for life insurance ads.

I think everyone has totally lost the gig on this one. Eurosong is as the name suggests a song contest, it's the song that wins, the singer is only a marketing tool. Did Chris Doran do badly cause he's talentless or was it because he sang a Brian McFadden song?

Doran? No, my sister knows him; apparently he was really nice when he was a contestant on Your a Star but he turned into a tosser after he won. Apparently his success went to his head, which is funny.

Originally I thought Fanning might be there as some kind of Simon Cowell figure who was going to rip the p**s out of the kids and send them away crying. Which would have been entertaining at least. But so far he's been even more forgiving than the other two. Some of the mutts he's voted for I would have laughed out the door.

dave fanning is out to pasture really - his days as a serious music critic are long gone. about time too since his music taste is terrible these days. I didnt get the whole 'it isnt eurovision' theory either. whats the point in having bands there with the intention of getting them to play utterly crap eurovision songs. i thought the bands AND their tunes were going to be important and maybe kick some life into the eurovision, but obviously not
