I think this is the first week since I started writing for Cluas that I haven't had anything published. Due to trips to London, Paris, Belgium and a constant Ryanair headache. But it's interesting to have more time to read new reviews by fellow Cluas writers. Of the new batch, I was quite impressed with Ken's 'American Music Club' live review (to which I might buy their album) and Anthony's 'The Blue Nile' album review. But it was the honesty and wording of Brian's 'Frames' live review that interested me the most. I myself was at that gig so I to can relate to the opinions stated.
Just wanted to say fair play as Brian put his point across well. And well done to the other writers too, I just picked one's that stood out to me. Cluas is defintely retaining its tag of being a top class review site. And the gigs of the forthnight section is an added bonus.

i don't like the frames.
i bought dance the devil, and while it has in my opinion the best songs they've done so far, i'm not a big fan.
but i disagree about short changing the fans because they played new songs.
i think a band has a right to play any songs they like to a crowd. its a more difficult job than playing the crowd pleasing hits, but its a braver option. if its a great show then they'll pull it off.
i think that everyone in the audience would have a different reaction to a gig like this, some people would know more songs than others, some would know every song, some would know none.

I think the Frames are kind of in a damned if they do damned if they don't kind of situation. I stopped going to see Frames gigs after a while because I'd seen them a couple of times and though each show was different, I had heard those songs so many times. I had done the Frames thing, there was nothing more to see. Now of course they have some new songs and while I haven't rushed out and bought the album (I can wait until it hits the bargain bin), seeing them perform new material might make them interesting again.
Basically if they don't start playing new material people are eventually gonna get bored, yet if they do, they get criticised for it. I would have thought fans would have been eager to hear the new material? Playing the entire album in order was probably not the smartest move hough.

After that particluar show has finished, my mate turned to me and said 'Well that was aload of s**t---what about all the older tunes?' I tried to explain that The Frames couldn't play 'Setlist' forever and that the new songs needed to be heard. It was a bad decision though to play the album all the way through especially as some of the songs simply aren't good enough to be played to a live audience. I applaud The Frames for trying to move forward but maybe they could've mixed the set up a little. But the review on Cluas is decent enough even if I don't agree with it 100%.

For the record, the Vicar Street gig the following Friday included all of the new album interspersed with older material, which apparently went down a treat with the crowd. Looks like Glen recognised the error of his ways on the original night.

A band can't keep playing their old songs. They might as well stop writing new ones altogether. But while I agree it is a bands prerogative to play what they like (hey, they're the ones putting on a show for you, remember) playing the album straight track-by-track is never a good idea. Takes away some of the spontaneity of a live show, I think

They could've played the album track by track but in the opposite direction for that extra bit of spontaneity
