This site is fantastic. Bands having websites is good, you get to learn more about them, see their picture etc. But it strikes me that no band has ever broken on the internet. Bands are screaming in space on the internet. I think websites for unsigned bands give a false impression, take away from the music. What do you think?

with the way things are going i dont see getting signed as particularily necessary going forward. Look at Kieran Goss, just a distribution deal. Granted its with Sony (mmmmoney, powerrr!!!!),also, he's a solitor so had plently of moola and knowledge, but its a business model for bands to consider.

i think sites for any bands unsigned, independent or otherwise are very very important as a contact point for a band. they arent there to break the band as such but just to find information on them (if you're already somewhat interested) or maybe check some music (by download if you're a first time listener) as for sites taking away from the music i really dont understand what you mean there? how are the two related at all?

I think an up to date, informative, interactive website is a MUST for any musician nowadays. I discover alot of new artists through the internet and it is very annonying when a good act don't have a good website. Especially upcoming/unsigned bands, as people want to know more about them. So band's websites should be encouraged.

If an unsigned band don't have a website, its hard for them to make ANY impression.

most unsigned band sites are complete crap, full of self praise and pages and pages of rubbish that only them and their friends want to read. i find a website can usually give me a bad impression of a band. going through the hwch site's band site links, they're almost all crap. there are a few exceptions: www.thedudleycorporation.com www.66earehome.com www.polarofficial.com www.doubledrat.net

Having a band presence on the net doesn't just mean having your own site, though that is important as having a point of contact, just like putting your phone number on a demo CD. What can be more effective is having your music featured on a popular and reputable site that people actually visit on a regular basis such as Epitonic.com (no longer taking submissions sadly) or Pitchforkmedia.coms MP3 section (which I think you have to pay for them to feature your MP3s). The truth is no one is actually going to go looking for your bands site if they have not heard of you before, but people looking for new music DO visit sites like Epitonic or similar.
