See now, I was born in 1980. Kicking and screaming, dragged into a world if extra terrestrials either getting stranded on Earth or hunting large men in a jungle and Empire's stiking back... But was the 80's really that bad? We had musical evolutionary steps courtesy of New Order and Duran Duran. We had the King of Pop in his golden days before he went, y'know, odd. Yes we had strange fashion periods but I hardly think that this is relevant in the grand history of music/talent. Who cares what kind of clothes someone wears as long as they write music. Nik Kershaw for instance. Anyway, lemme know your thoughts...

I, like yourself Optimus am and 80's child - I loved the cheesy 80's stuff, but remember, hindsight is a great thing, in the 80's all the musicians thought they were pushing the boat, some of the music was crap by supposedly good artists, some of the music was fantastic, I mean check out the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, The Jam/Style Council (ok not all of the Style Council). All in all it was bad for fashion, decent for music, great for growing up in

Eighties music was great, but growing up in Ireland in the eighties? Not so great.

The early 80s makes me shudder with disgust, it should be removed from history – generally everything was wrong - music, fashion (mullets, Miami vice jackets, men with make up, leg warmers!), films, Naff sums up the whole era. I really don’t get the new romantic scene, so very wrong … I feel sick.

And that wasn't even in Ireland. Here we had everyone wearing brown, all the women looked like men only worse and people were pining after the showband era. "What ever happened to a good old fashioned dance?"

The 80's ruled. Husker Du, Big Black, Black Flag, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, Joy Division/New Order, Replacements, Waterboys, U2, Bad Brains, Birthday Party, Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Skin Yard, Mother Love Bone, New Model Army, P Furs, Screaming Trees, Tad, The Residents...some of my favorite music ever happened in the 80's. A friend of mine recently said this in an email to me: "Okay, so you know what cracks me up about these '80's revival movies, compilation cds, etc. The music that defines the decade was music we got s**t for listening to. Now all of a sudden EVERYONE was listening to OMD, Depeche Mode, and New Order? I think it's funny. If you really wanted to do a realistic '80's soundtrack it would have to include Poisen/Loverboy/Rick Astley, etc. Basically you'd have a really crappy cd!"

Of course there was alot of good music in the eighties, but there was so, so much evil, bad, wrong music. Many cool musicians who were previously making great music went through their dark/naff period in the early-mid eighties eg eric clapton, paul mccartney, rod stewart, james taylor, john martyn, robert plant..... etc Shoulder pads, what were they thinking?! I feel sick again.

I must stress that fashion sense was not part of the embargo. This is about the music. And re: Eric Clapton...I think you'd go thru a dark period if your kid fell out of a window 100 feet up, y'know? But as you can see from above, the argument about the 80's being pap, is not as substantiated as people would lead you to believe. Even the more poppy stuff like the aforementioned Nik Kershaw and to add to that, Tears for Fears, were cracking. Tears for Fears even made a couple of ace records in the 90's. And they've appeared on the cult fave, Donnie Darko. Anyway, this was just to prove a point that the 80's didnt in fact suck half as much as has been told.

Actually, its amazing the number of dark rockers who like to cover 80s pop tracks... Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love & Personal Jesus Korn - Word Up Ataris - Boys of Summer RHCP - I Feel Love

Dont forget, Manson did do a cover of the Eurythmics legendary, "Sweet Dreams". But even outside the world of rock, pop-pups are doing covers of 80's tracks. A1 did "Take On Me". Britneys just done "My Perogative". Granted, both of the originals here dont rate as high for me as the likes of "Wouldnt it be good?", "Head Over Heels" or "Why Cant I be You?"... But the revival and respect is creeping through the woodwork. Go team 80's. Transform and roll out.

seven more songs and he could release an album entitled, 'Manson Sings The 80s'
