Boris, The Dudley Corporation, Like A Kind Of Matador
Whelans, Dublin
8th April 2003
Admission 10 euro
Japanese cult favourites BORIS will be making their first visit to Ireland
on April 8th to celebrate the release of a split 7" between themselves and
Dublin's The Dudley Corporation, available on the night on Scientific
Laboratories records.
BORIS have been making ear-meltingly heavy sludge-rock music since 1994.
They'll be playing songs from their recent Heavy Rocks LP, a landmark
record which shows they can write shorter catchy songs and has had the likes
of Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters hiding behind their couches.
This date comes in the middle of a run of Irish gigs for The Dudley
Corporation who have been making waves in Ireland for the past few years,
releasing an acclaimed LP in 2001 entitled The Lonely World Of The Dudley
Corporation along with a ton of singles,
fancy foreign tours and radio appearances. They head to Scotland in May to
record their
second full-length at Chemikal Underground's Chem19 studios.
Other Dudley Corporation dates:
3 April Dundalk - Spirit Store: with Large Mound and NeoSuperVital
6 April Kilkenny - Cleeres: with Large Mound and Estel
24 April Galway - Warwick Hotel: with NPB and El Diablo
25 April Limerick - High Stool: with Waiting Room
26 April Cork - Lobby: with Waiting Room
Boris:
Boris formed during the early 1990s and consists of guitarist Wata,
bassist Takeshi, and drummer/vocalist Atsuo. They made their first
recorded appearance on an obscure 1994 compilation entitled "Take Care of
Scabbard Fish", released only in Japan and now out of print. "Absolutego",
their full-length debut, came out in 1996, "Amplifier Worship", came out
on the Mangrove label in 1998. 1998 also saw the release of the
Boris/Keiji Haino collaboration, a live disc entitled Black: Implication
Flooding, which came out on Japan's Inoxia Records. Their third
full-length album, "Flood", was released two years later on the MIDI
Creative label. 2002 Boris brought us a killer, consciously more "ROCK"
album: "Heavy Rocks" (featuring collaborations with: Lori/Acid King,
Masonna, and Merzbow). Yet another unique release from this eclectic band.
The Dudley Corporation:
Several singles and a load of compilation appearances have given The
Dudley Corporation adulation on both sides of the Irish Sea on the back of
jaw-dropping live performances. Succinctly, they play short rock songs
with wit, verve and booksmarts.
In June 2001 they headed to Chem19 Studios in Scotland to record their
first full-length with Andy Miller. 2002 saw them play a 15 date tour of
the US and Iceland to coincide with the US release of their LP. Recording
for the next one begins in May 2003 following the release of two new 7"
singles.
"It is a John Cusack of a rock album: the songs full of a robust, boyish
energy, an I-can't-stop-myself hyperactivity, a tremendous intelligence
and a tendency to go off without any notice on fantastic, mind-boggling
tangents." - Hot Press
