Yeah, these record company samplers are great. Got a trojan records sampler once for about the same price, and almost every track on it was pure class. I really miss Muzik Magazine though, they used to give away a brilliant mix cd every month that would always have some brilliant dance tracks you would never hear otherwise. Really obscure vinyl 12" stuff like Bergheim 34, Black Strobe, etc. Kicks the arse of a Euphoria compilation any day.

Nope, been very busy lately, In the middle of trying to change jobs and lots of other stuff (actually feels like its been one thing or another the whole year). Would love to hear if anyone else made it though. Erol Alkan was DJing too at the deathdisco thing too I believe. But what I'm really gutted about is that I only just found out Lali Puna played the Temple Bar as part of the festival on Friday the 23rd and I never even knew about it.
On the plus side, at least I can console myself with the fact that I was at a fantastic Gillian Welch gig that very friday evening.

Those bands are all on Sub Pop? I'm so out of it.
I have an old Sub Pop compilation from before grunge broke. Box set w/Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Melvins, Tad, Thrown-Ups, etc. On vinyl!

Klootfan, this thread on record company samplers got me thinking that I gotta check this kind of stuff out more often, so I was looking in the "label compilation" section of my local Virgin Megastore yesterday and I found a Memphis Industries sampler called "Estuary English" for the princely sum of 1 cent! First track on it was from a band called the The Go! Team. Pretty good stuff, kind of a sample-based soul track. Haven't really listened to they rest because I've been listening to Miss Kittins new album "I-Com".
Another sampler that I'd reccomend is the Damaged Goods one, it features Holly Go-Lightly, Mikabomb, The Headcoats (and Headcoatees!), Manic Street Preachers (yawn), The Revillos, and The Cuban Boys (the twisted minds that brought us the hamster dance song a few years ago). Listen to the whole thing online at: http://www.damagedgoods.co.uk/sounds/index.html

Ill have a look out for those samplers. They sound good.
Well, I have to admit that the sub pop sampler has worked.
Im now actively looking into buying at least 5 if not more albums from artists on this list
For anyone that cares, they are
The Shins-Kissing the Lipless
The Thermals-How We Know
Constantines-Young Lions
Rogue Wave-Endless Shovel
Frausdots-Soft Light
and possibly The Helio Sequence-Blood Bleeds

The latest Shins album that 'Kissing The Lipless' is on, entitled 'Chutes Too Narrow'....is a great album. It really grows with every listen. I was hooked on it for a week solid. I missed them at Oxegen though.

The Shins gig in Whelans was amazing. Missed oxeygen, heard it was great though. They do a great version of Destroy the Heart by the house of love.

Here's the entire tracklist for the Sub Pop 200 box set:
Tad - Sex God Missy
The Fluid - Is it Day I'm Seeing?
Nirvana - Spank Thru
Steven J. Bernstein - Come Out Tonight
Mudhoney - The Rose
Walkabouts - Got No Chains
Terry Lee Hale - Dead is Dead
Soundgarden - Sub Pop Rock City
Green River - Hangin' Tree
Fastbacks - Swallow My Pride
Blood Circus - The Outback
Swallow - Zoo
Chemistry Set - Underground
Girl Trouble - Gonna Find A Cave
The Nights and Days - Split
Cat Butt - Big Cigar
Beat Happening - Pajama Party In A Haunted Hive
Screaming Trees - Love or Confusion
Steve Fisk - Untitled
Thrown Ups - You Lost It
Guess I was wrong about the Melvins being on it. I must have gotten it mixed up the Deep Six compilation, which I had on tape as a teen, and that had the Melvins on it, doing "Scared" and "Blessing the Operation."
I have a lot of early grunge stuff on vinyl, including Nirvana's first record single, which is rare and goes for a lot these days. I even have some early U2 singles on vinyl. :)

I'd put the Shins' "Chutes too narrow" on my top 10 of 2003 without question. Gets better with every listen.
Klootfan, have you listened to the Iron and Wine song? Do you have their first album? the song on that comp is from their second called "our endless numbered days". It's really good, but the first (Creek Drank the Cradle) is heart-stoppingly-stunning (as is their cover of the postal service's 'such great heights'. Worth hunting down or even buying from the itunes store if they have it...).
Thermals and constantines are both good, though i'd take Mountain Goats over the Thermals any day. Comets on Fire are also worth checking out.
Last decent comp i bought was the defjux comp. Next one will be the merge records comp (3 discs with everyone from the buzzcocks to spoon to lambchop to m. ward to superchunk to early magnetic fields and neutral milk hotel PLUS bunches of bands i've never heard of.)
hot damn.

I have actually, and i liked it alot. I see from ticketmasters site that they are playing whelans on Nov 5th. Might be worth a wander in.
I had a look around town for some of the albums i mentioned.
The only band that seemed to be in a lot of the shops was the thermals. But at 20 Euro, i think ill purchase online instead.
I found the Constantines in tower, but they were looking for 25 Euro. I aint ever going to pay anything like that for a 14 track cd
