This thread was inspired by a truly awful gig I was at in Cyprus Avenue in Cork on saturday night (which was probably made to appear even worse due to the fact that I had just seen Gillian Welch play a fantastic gig the previous night). Some friends asked me to come with them to see some local bands, which in fairness is always a gamble. Anyway, all three bands turned out to be angsty nu-metal types - eek! In fairness the second band, Levelhead were actually not bad. I don't like new metal but these guys actually could play, write decent songs, understood the importance of tone and were even a bit experimental in their sound, definitely the "Deftones" amidst the Linkin Park wannabes. I didn't like their music, but they definitly got my respect. The other two bands were very Spinal Tap, the first band called "poxy" appropriately enough featuring a guitarist who reminded me of Jack Black in that scene from "school of rock" where he ends up stage diving onto the floor.. in a bad way. No stage diving antics thankfully, but you get the idea. The final band of the evening called TewlveThirteen featured a singer who looked like the unholy love-child of The Incredible Hulk, Alice Cooper and Keanu Reeves. Funniest moment? When TwelveThirteens lead singer tells us in a strong east Cork accent about how the next song is about "my home village of Shanagarry and I wrote a song about it because I love it" then the band proceeds to to descend into an extremely heavy song with angsty, shouty, incoherent vocals totally indistinguishable from the last. OK it would be a lie to say I didn't enjoy the gig, it was very entertaining in a Spinal Tap way, but I enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons and couldn't hear properly for most of Sunday too. Well thats my worst gig in recent memory that I've sat all the way through, over to you folks. Whats the worst gig you have ever stayed all the way through?

Thankfully I've never been subjected to a full woeful set. The only thing I can add is a memory of a horrible support act. I had to stay as I was reviewing the gig, and was really there for the main band. The support act were this abnd from the North called Ten Past Seven (alot of people are probably going to write back and say they are good). But on this particluar night in Whelans, they were shockingly bad and really annonying. Their music was gruntled up noise with no structure, the singer was awful but the worst thing about their set was when they communicated with the crowd. The cocky drummer screamed out 'Buy our cd you Dublin w**kers'.....that kind of hammered the final nail on their coffin for me. Won't be rushing to see them again and certainly won't be buying their cd.

Was at a local festival this weekend. 3 acts, First up was George Murphy, of Your a Star fame. I can only describe this guy as possibly the worst singer i have every heard, and that includes dodgy karakoe sets. Why the corwd were entertained by him, ill never know. He murdered every cover that he sang. Every cover was in the same Luke Kelly sounding voice. Why does this 18/19 lad put on fake, blindingly bad luke kelly voice to sing and more importantly, why were there people enjoying it. Rubbish. Thankfully, TURN finished up the night, with picturehouse in between

linkin park (apparently so named so that they would be positioned beside limp biskit in record stores when nu-metal was the nu thang to like and thus be cool)supporting metallica last year (2003). they're dreadful, but outdoors their sound was even worse. plus some ignorant people started throwing stuff at them, which is wrong in my book (then again I wasnt 17 and full of beer at that gig!) At one point the singer, chesnut boddingtons or whatever, started trying to get the crowd on side by stating he loved metallica. this didnt work. that was the least the crowd expected a support act to say! his weak singing and the bad rapping of his mate on stage ruined them. the rest of the show was magnificant though.
