AN OPEN LETTER TO CATHY DAVEY,
I am writing as a longstanding fan of Nina Hynes. I have been to more of her concerts than I can count . Also, I have met someone who worked with you and confirmed that you are also a fan of Nina’s music. I am aware that doing interviews is a new thing for you so your words were probably twisted in the telling of your PR campaign.
It seemed ludicrous however, in your Sunday Times interview , coming from someone who insists that she does not want to be pigeon-holed , you tried to do the very same to Nina(and Gemma Hayes) who has so obviously been an influence to you.
Apart from the fact that Nina would have many more fans than you ,.(without the aid of any major label funding and PR campaign), she is obviously not of the generic girl with an acoustic guitar variety, so for you to suggest that she is in the national press is absurd. Indeed , it is rare that you will find Nina playing an acoustic guitar in the troubadour fashion but when she does, believe me , it is never boring.
I imagine it is not easy to carve a niche for yourself so fast, but maybe instead of trying to undermine those who have so obviously been an influence on your music (consciously or otherwise), you could pay your respects. Nina has developed a fan base through pure hard work and brilliant original music.
I’m sure you will be a great success as you have everything on your side and good luck in your journey of finding your voice. It is wonderful to see major labels investing in real music for a change.
Dave in Dublin.
