For 24 years the annual
"Vibe
for Philo" event has celebrated the life, work, and musical legacy of
Philip Lynott in his native city,
Dublin. Originating in a personal request by
Lynott in 1981 to his old friend
Smiley Bolger to "do a vibe for me sometime," it has
become something of a mecca for
LIZZY
supporters old and new worldwide. Over the years,
Eric Bell,
Brian Robertson,
Brian Downey,
Scott Gorham,
Darren Wharton,
Midge Ure,
John Sykes, and
Marco
Mendoza, along with other
Lynott
associates from
GRAND SLAM,
THE THREE MUSKETEERS,
PHIL LYNOTT SOUL BAND, and
ORPHANAGE have also performed. Tribute
bands from 14 countries have taken the stage, as well as a host of the finest
new Irish acts wishing to pay their dues to the inspiration that was the main
man of Irish rock music.
Now as we approach the 25th anniversary of
Lynott's
death, both Dublin and the wider
LIZZY
supporting community have been split down the middle with the plans by the
largely Los Angeles-based lineup of the new
THIN LIZZY to play Dublin on January 4 in direct opposition to
The Vibe. Amid the wider confusion,
many are actually calling it
The 25th
Vibe, which it has taken its inspiration from but is not part of. A
FACEBOOK PETITION started by
Vibe/
Lynott supporters, "Save the 2011 Vibe for Philo from being
Hijacked," gathered 1,000 members in 19 hours and at present stands at
over 5,500 "outraged, disappointed, hurt, and confused"
LIZZY supporters.
At press time, there has been no comment from the band, its management or
associated promoters regarding the situation.
The
Vibe for Philo will take place
in Dublin on January 4, 2011, as it has done for the past 24 years, at a venue
and with a lineup to be announced.
