I came here to break this news!
It's hard to know how to feel. As a musician, the guy was an utter genius and one has to wonder how good he could have been if he hadn't had such a fucked up childhood!
However, as a person...those rumours, if true, just but a big huge footnote on anything he achieved musically.

Such a tragic and grotesque life...
Listening to 'Thriller' just now....'Wanna Be Starting Something' is genius! 'Thriller', 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' back to back....epic.

It's sad news. I wrote an article here a couple of years ago (at the time of his court case) when I wondered if he could one day sort himself out and get back to being a performer. Well, at least he has some peace now. I'm sure you'll see this ad infinitum over the next few days: 'Billie Jean' at the Motown 25th concert in 1983. It's sensational from start to finish, but what he does at 3 mins 40 secs is still mind-blowing, even if you've seen it a zillion times:

Totally agreed. But as you also say he sure did have some nifty tunes on Thriller than continue to stand the test of time. Back in 2005 Aidan did a great opinion piece on Jacko for CLUAS, check it out: "Michael Jackson: demon or demonised? Or both?"

Just read Aidan's piece there, very good. One thing though where you said 'However, short of inventing a cure for cancer, AIDS and the common cold in one pill, nothing that he could do will ever redeem his reputation now, even if he is found innocent'
It seems all he had to do was die and the vast majority of people are willing to forget about his relationship with children. Personally, I think ignoring that side of him does more damage to his legacy than mentioning it.
Ever since the trial I've found it very difficult to listen to his records but I listened to Off The Wall last night and you can just know your listening to a man with seemingly unlimited talent and genius.
What a pity then I just can't bring myself to seperate the man from the music.

Personally, I think ignoring that side of him does more damage to his legacy than mentioning it. I don't think it has been forgotten or ignored. For instance, the obits and articles I've seen this morning all mention it in a very objective way, and I think most people consider it as part of what Jan called his "tragic and grotesque" life.

I'm just going on what I'm reading online or seeing on the news where most seem to be brushing over it like it's some sort of aside. I'll have a look at the papers now and see what the obits are saying though.

The newspapers seem to be much more balanced alright...time to turn off the TV I think!

It's strange that he was supposed to be starting his big comeback soon, having passed a medical and fitness check, and yet was found to be completely emaciated in the autopsy.

When I was watching the memorial it did get at me a bit. He was a fantastic musician, but Mariah Carey should never be allowed out for any reason! Anyways, when his daughter spoke at the end about her "daddy" it did make me realise something which seems to have been forgotten in all of the coverage is how this will affect his kids. Yes, there have been brief mentions of them but it brings to light the fact that he was human. That's something that I forgot, at least.

Haven't got the time to watch it's memorial. Very busy lately finishing busy schedules.. Still, no matter how people mocked him with all of the intrigues before, still he is an icon. And he's not a good singer if nobody talks about him..but knowing all those news on the net and ads, wow, he's the legend.. Peace to Michael! [blatant link spam removed by moderator]
