The Ticket today published a list of 'The 50 best Irish music acts right now" as selected by a panel of 4 of their writers. A solid list? Or simply a travesty because, er, Van Morrison and Sinead O'Connor didn't make the grade?

Travesty would be a bit OTT seeing as these things are just meant to kick-start a bit of good-natured discussion. (Although 'travesti' is the French word for 'transvestite' so I see the connection with Van.)

Still, as the acts aren't being judged on current releases (e.g. U2) you'd have expected Van and Sinead to be in it. And let's not even START on Enya's exclusion : )

The list applies to to bands that have been active live in 2008, not just released new material.

Any list that excludes the Frank and Walters is just wrong. Their current output may not be up there with their peak, but as a live act, they're still incredible. They've gigged this year too, in France funnily enough.

..and how come MBV are so low down? Too obvious?

Don't get me started on Damien rice...

I never get the hatred that Damien Rice inspires. The first time I heard O it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Fair enough, by the 50millionth time he toured it I was a little bored but it is still an extraordinarily beautiful record. My personal tastes have moved on from when I bought O but it is still the only irish singer/songer record I'd consider listening to.

MBV rated lower than Fight Like Apes....missed that first time around.

Interesting the reaction to the list though...CLUAS should be careful with our best record of the last 10 years list!

agree 100% with the Franks, unreal that a list of , say, 5 Top acts could omit them, never mind 50! Also, Hybrasil, sweet jesus, as good as a live band gets. Giveamanakick too, anyone?

Villagers, nice one, just heightens my annoyance at arriving at the Nerve Centre last night late to BellX1 and being told that Villagers were supporting, damn pre-season football training to the fires of hell grrrrrrrrrrr

I just can't stand that record, ignoring all the milking it dry crap, it's just so damn unmusical, that whole stretching out phrases, and practically whispering, so ridiculously rhythmically loose that all tension is lost from the music. Its just a horrible mush. Tried to give it an unbiased listen but it just grates.

If the poll proves anything, it's that Jim Carroll is the biggest tit writing about Irish music today. Knob.

U2 at 18, Delorentos at 16, fuck off!

And Imelda May did well for herself to be placed 21st best irish act within 1 year!

To be fair, the intentions of the article are unclear..

Is it the top 50 alive right now? active right now? or with material out right now (new)?

Carroll is someone who writes around new stuff so I would hazard a guess that the third was the original intention....

And Imelda May has been around for a long time, my missus grew up with her..she's paid her dues and is no overnight success..

Also at least the guy is trying to have a finger on whats going on...And I wouldnt agree with alot of what he writes..however Michael Night, Evil Harrisons etc really good stuff...Should be nopticed more/managed better....

I thought the criteria was bands who've gigged or released a record in the past 2 years?  Either way I don't think the list is terrible.  There are obviously some bands/musician's I personally would have included that didn't make the cut but writing about music is so subjective that was always going to be the case.  That being said, I think they could have used the opinion of more than just 3 people, it's not exactly going to be representative that way, not like certain other publications that I'm sure would give all it's writers the chance to have their say.
