Are the pubs and clubs paying you too much for your bands performance?? I did'nt think so. Having looked around now for a while at what the average band gets paid for a night I think its a complete disgrace. I heard recently about a certain band getting paid 50 euro for playing a support slot to a packed olympia. With 4 of them in the band that didnt cover their taxi there. I think with the cost of backline and transport now a minimum of 500 euro should be paid by all venues. Is this crazy ? I would like to see a debate about this. I dont believe that pubs would be forced to cancel music, look at the price of a pint for gods sake. If all bands got together and said they would not play for less surely the pubs would have to pay. If you are in a band and think its a good idea then put your comments at http://www.voy.com/134362/ If you think its a bad idea tell me why. www.cpu-records.com

You know really gets to me is the fact that some muppet dj that plays hits of fm 104 in the likes of buskers or some s**t hole like would earn about 400 yoyos a nigth. The only place i can think of that is doing something worthwhile at the mo is the mezz. If there were more place's like that were its actually about the music and not the paper dublin would be buzzin. But what do we do about it. Have a musicians strike! Until other people start leading by mezzinines example were f**ked. Dublin is dying on its arse and it has been since ive been playing. Its getting worse not better. We need someone to take it by the scruff we need a modern age Tony wilson, any volunters...........

The Mezzanine is opposite the Irish Film Centre on Eustace Street in Temple Bar.

I dont know if anything will come of it but I think theres 2 fronts this could be fought on. The First is for bands themselves to put their name to a petition so that it reaches a critical mass where venue owners would be forced to part with a very small part of their profits ( 500 euro) The second is a naming and shaming of the clubs that exploit bands and refuse to pay. Naming them alone wont do it but if a boycott of those venues was then put in place right down to picketting them outta do the trick. I am willing to give some of my free time and I am sure there are others willing to do likewise. again I refer to those who are in a band. in the above post there is a forum to make your voice heard. The alternative is continue getting f**ked without so much as dinner and flowers. www.cpu-records.com

I'm not trying to sound negative, and I think it's great that the point has been raised - but i just can't help feeling that going the 'sign a petition' or 'write a letter to your TD' route gets you no where really fast. I know that sounds defeatist but there you go. HAlf the music loving population of this country has been championing the petition for No-Disco to go back on air and there's been little movement on that and it's unlikely that there will be either. the higher echelons of Irish society make the decision based on who owns the purse strings - in this case the promoters. But at the end of the day the fat cats are going to keep getting fatter due to the reason that irish ounters still pay over the odds for ticket prices (see also paying over the odds for drink, and everything else). Puttin in a call to the relevant venue and making a comment or emailing their office with your points and boycotting the venue in question or the promoted gigs in question is about the most you can do. It's sad. Don't play in venues that over charge and support those that pay with abundant enthusiasim - perhaps when the crowd follows suit (as they would eventually) they'll get back to paying a reasonable rate for a performance.
