.. when we've such excellent homegrown music programmes like the one on Network 2 last night. Inspired performances from The Blizzards, the highly appropriately named The Thrills, that wonder boy of the pop world, Mr. Brian McFadden (featuring a member from The Chapters on cello)... all culminating in a truly life changing performance of "Anyone Can Be A Star" from the exhuberant Paddy Casey - it even had a mind blowing bass solo. Quality stuff - and people complain that RTE spends our license fee badly. Tut tut.

    What show was this?

Other Voices is a good music show. It's not (as far as I can see) a poor mans imitation of a proven BBC format. Something RTÉ usually specialise in. Putting it in a live venue was a great idea. RTÉ studios have zero atmosphere and the sound on shows like the Late Late Show is dreadful. The line-up choices are mixed, but then you can say the same of Later.... there's usually enough there to keep me interested each week and it seems to get better every year. So if it means a few more viewer friendly shows are broadcast to keep the numbers up, what harm?

On the whole though, having to pay a TV license for RTÉ is a joke.

Dunno what show it was, but it was car crash television. Have to say though, the sound was amazing, though that showed up the very limited vocal harmonies from the Blizzards & Thrills camps. And yer man from Thrills - what's he like? I'm surprised Gift Grub hasn't ruined their career in the same way Craig David's was killed off by Bo Selecta (or so he claims.. it COULDN'T be the music, that's for certain!).

I'm not a big fan of Other Voices - I've only ever seen 2 bands that I liked on it.. Elbow & Stars. As for the Late Late... jaysus, I wouldn't sit through that yoke even if Sonic Youth were on it! I'm a picky f**ker anyway - hard to please!

I remember when Craig David was a promising young speed garage vocalist. Then he made the mistake of making his own records.

Didn't know that.. though there's no doubt that the boy can rap. I was at a few urban & garage nights last time I was in London - some of the MCs are feckin amazing... some leap from the "hippitey-hop-till-you-can't-stop" style rappin' of the 80's!!

Don't suppose you've ever seen that program with the girl who plays Dev's daughter from Coronation Street, playing an MC? She's pretty handy at it too!

Did a track with artful dodger (with the unfortunate Bo! Selecta! phrase), it charted and everything. Not exactly brilliant (though fresh sounding at the time, post D&B) but better than latter stuff. I've never been a big fan of any form of UK Garage though. Always seemed a bit contrived and something that middle aged music critics sort of latched onto because it was "edgy"

LOL! I don't read many reviews, so I'll take yr word on it.. though from experience, the club nights I was at in London were class. Not a middle aged critic in sight either!

We're on a Craig David buzz now. Must've been the speed.
