Was at this over the weekend. Utterly brilliant, so good it's hard to find fault with it...really! The only word to describe the woodland and lake setting of Belvedere House, just outside Mullingar, was magical, especially on Sunday when we got the first hot day of the summer...incredible mix of people, (indie kids,Thirtysomething EP types, parents and their kids)...no queues for the the toilets (for the men anyway!!) or the bar..lovely food stalls...no skangers...no trouble or arrests...no serious traffic jams...good security...low Garda presence....and then...the music...Glen Campbell, Christy Moore et al not really my cuppa tea but there were some real gems in the line-up..highlight was Richard Thompson, also great sets from Aimee Mann, The Waterboys, Anjani, Steve Earle, Richmond Fontaine, Jose Gonzalez, Blind Boys Of Alabama...Gillian Welch and David Rawlings on the main stage in the evening sun was something really special...the only negative thing I could say was the endless rain on Saturday amd maybe they could have added a few more alt.country or crossover acts like those listed above but Midlands is someting truly new and exciting...roll on Midlands 2008!

Aimee Mann seems a bit out of place in that line-up - hope she still got a good reception.

It seems that these smaller festivals are really taking off in Ireland - compared to bigger weekend fests (no names named) there's a better atmosphere, no hassle... and excellent line-ups.

I almost went on the strength of Welch/Rawlings alone. I saw them in Vicar st a few years ago and they're really excellent together. Their guitar and voices interwine so seamlessly, its something else, and Rawlings is one of the finest acoustic guitar players I've ever seen. He never goes overboard, perfect accompaniment player, and has a great sense of rhythm in his playing too.

Their collaboration with Robyn Hitchcock is really good. Only picked it up recently.
Glad to hear they went down well. Now when are they coming back to Dublin??

Aimee Mann fitted in perfectly, there is a hint of country to her music...Welch and Rawlings, were, along with Richard Thompson, the highlights of the weekend, bought a couple of her albums at the gig,,'Time (The Revelator) is amazing...

Glen Campbell not your cup of tea, Quint? Have a gander at this, and repent! This song moves me in ways I dare not get into on a public forum. Glad you had a good time.

Glen Campbell was a bit cabaret, putting Ireland into as many songs as possible, but even if he isn't your cup of tea, it would be hard not to sing along to most of his songs, he really did deliver a greatest hits show, although very schmaltzy.
It was a really good festival, and it would have been great if Steve Earle had his band backing him. The Waterboys were excellent on Saturday, as was Aimee Mann, and Richard Thompson.
On Sunday Richmond Fontaine were excellent as usual, and The Blind Boys of Alabama managed to put a big smile on everyone's face. It was also great to hear Paul Brady play some great songs from Hard Station, along with more of his hits.

Its some song, isn't it? I have a version by a group called the Friends of Dean Martinez where its played instrumentally on pedal steal. I don't know if it tops Glens version but the song stands by itself as an instrumental, its really beautifully done. It's just one of those melodies.

F*ck, I'm raging now I didn't go to this....had already bought a ticket and booked hotel and flight to see Arctic Monkeys in Manchester....f**king shambles of a gig even though the Monkeys played brilliantly as usual. Richard Thompson and Aimee Mann together on the same bill was like a f*cking dream ticket for me but in the end, I had to make a decision and chose to go with the Monkeys. Ah well, such is life. *sighs*. Wonder is Aimee Mann gearing up for a new album ?
