http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/arts_entertainment/music/cd+wow+given+record+fine/536447 Apparently its the highest fine ever for the British and Irish phonographic industries. Is this the death-knell for CDWow ? In the global market of d'internet, where do companies like CDwow and Play.com fit in ? Why should someone be denied the opportunity of purchasing a product more cheaply in from another country

I buy almost all my cds and dvd's off CD Wow. What's the problem with a little competition to the high street stores? Why should they set the standard? HMV etc need to lower their prices considerably before I'll buy there. Don't mind so much spending more in Road Recs or wherever. Hope this fine doesn't mean the prices go up on CD Wow.

Can't you just see the BPI meeting where they planned this. Head Guy: "Hey guys, we're like the least popular group of companies/organisation in the world, we're in desperate need of some good publicity to rekindle the public's faith in us, what should we do?" Some other dude: "Oh, I know, lets target online sellers, from whom we still make buckets of money, and who don't break any copyright laws, because they have the nerve to sell CD's to people €5 cheaper than [insert major high-street music retailer here]." Head Guy: "Oh yes, that will definately help increase high street music sales, have a bonus." ...or something like that.

Just checked it there, the prices seem to be the same for the minute but with a fine like that I doubt it will be long before we start seeing the prices sneak up, shame...!

I think the most important thing is, what will be done with the £41m ... Will it be put back into help these Young British musicians that CD WOW are 'choking', or will it get Elton John an 8 album £15m contract ? Like the old adage about Home Taping is killing music, from where I sit, 2 things are having major impact; 1. The issuing of Free CDs with Newspapers ... Me & Mine buy CDs, the generation before us generally don't. But why would this untapped market bother spending €20 on the Best of Frank Sinatra/UB40/Martha Reeves etc, when they can get it for €2 with a Newspaper. 2. The ill advised contracts that are issued ... The deals like REMs 5 album/$80m Deal in the mid90s (when they went commercially downhill) & Mariah Carey getting $49m to leave Virgin Records after 1 album, only for her to become successful again, so she gets another $20m dollar contract.
