hi. i'm from the US and the state of popular music is not good. the only people that make money in the music business here are the beautiful ones that look great in tight jeans. i don't think it's fair that the music media decides who we should lay down our hard earned dollas for. when did everyone stop deciding that for themselves? i'm not against loving music that everyone else loves too, if it's good. but for the most part it just isn't. i think talented musicians deserve to make piles and piles of money. no one ever put the beatles down for being the richest and most recognized rock band ever. any thoughts? so what do you guys like to listen to? d.y.i. music media, there is no other way.

well it's hard to say. those of us who post here probably have huge descrepencies in what we listen to too.there are many more choices than just bad chart music or good alternative.it's all personal taste and you havent mentioned any other bands that you're into,so i dont know. try "deus" or "the flaming lips".tom waits is fantastic.and i really like a band called hefner.i'm not sure if the audogalaxy website is still up and running ,but if it is ,it's a good place to start.every band u look at has an "other listeners liked......." thing on it so you knid find lots of stuff u'd probably enjoy and had not heard of before. hope that helps.

If it is good music you are after, the best place to start are some of the better music mags. NME (www.nme.com) has been around for years and is a goos showcase for up and coming bands. My own favourite at the moment is Uncut. It is a bot expensive (I'd imagine about 7 dollars and is published once a month. It has lots of good music/cinema articles, a particularly stronf review section and best of all a CD every month is lots of new music - a great sampler of new stuff. Other than that, your own country is throwing up lots od good music at the moment. Check out the likes of the FLaming lips, Mercury Rev, Wilco, Hamell on Trial and Jim O'Rourke. Perhaps you should give us an idea of bands you already like for goos pointers to similar bands.

Welcome, knockitdown. I don't pay much attention to the American music scene either for the same reasons you've described. Personally, I think that rap and R&B is dominating the scene to a ridiculous degree. Still, REM will have a new album early next year, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers' new album is selling like hot cakes everywhere, and the Strokes and the White Stripes are really making it big especially in this part of the world, so it's not all bad. You should check out other bands like The Coral, or the Reindeer section, the Revs, the Doves, Vic Chestnutt, Embrace,Idlewild, the list goes on and on. I reckon rock is finally making a long overdue comeback, certainly here in Europe anyway. Anyway, hope you check out some of my suggestions. Peace and welcome Q

thank you so much for the warm welcome guys. i tried to find out about new music on the nme.com forum and everyone was so judgemental and abusive to me and everyone else. ick! i just posted there that i was never coming back! as far as what i like, wow. there is so much. here's what i brought to work today: the black crowes, live steve vai dee dee bridgewater oasis (don't hate me) weezer beastie boys dave mason stevie wonder gravity kills dead milkmen tom maxwell (from the squirrel nut zippers) fishbone paul mccartney a mixed cd with starsailor (again, don't hate me), scorpions, van morrison and bonnie raitt. i also have the new red hot chili peppers cd and it is very different, but really good! i like blues influenced 70's rock, i like tori amos, bjork, jeff buckley, ella fitzgerald, the smiths, spacehog, brian setzer, jonny lang, david gray, rollins band and monster magnet. basically if it's great, i'm there. **oh, i also wanted to recommend to the person who likes the strokes and white stripes, check out the mooney suzuki, they're great!** http://www.themooneysuzuki.com/music.shtml Edited by - knockitdown on 30 Aug 2002 22:10:03
