If you thought vibrating panties and spaceships were the only strange things the Flaming Lips were dreaming up, think again: the eccentric rockers have announced they are planning to turn 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots into a Broadway musical.

The noise-experimentalists with a penchant for the bizarre are teaming up with TV writer and show creator Aaron Sorkin — the man who adapted The Who’s Tommy into a stage adaptation and who created the West Wing — to write the musical’s script. Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy) has also been tapped to oversee the sure-to-be-wacky production. Judging by the Lips’ legendary stage show — which includes tons of confetti, frontman Wayne Coyne rolling over the crowd in a human-sized blow-up hamster ball and dancing Santas, among other things — and the trippy source material, the Broadway version is sure to be a spectacle.

''I tell people all the time, it's not really a story. It's more like a mood,'' Coyne tells Entertainment Weekly of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. ''There's a Japanese girl; she fights some robots; that's five minutes. After that I don't know.''

Solid production on the musical has yet to begin and an opening date is likely years away, by Coyne says the play will follow the themes of the album.

'There's the real world and then there's this fantastical world,'' explains Coyne. ''This girl, the Yoshimi character, is dying of something. And these two guys are battling to come visit her in the hospital. And as one of the boyfriends envisions trying to save the girl, he enters this other dimension where Yoshimi is this Japanese warrior and the pink robots are an incarnation of her disease. It's almost like the disease has to win in order for her soul to survive. Or something like that.''
