Was at this gig last night in Whelans - venue was jam packed! Anyone else there? First up was The Chapters. They were good, didn't quite get the crowd going and seemed a little bit lethargic at times but musicianship was excellent, albeit no real stand out tracks. Great start to the night though. Next up was Superjimenez. I don't think i've come across such an exciting new talent in ages. Endless bags of energy, got the crowd involved, looked great (goggles on the guitarist were hilarious!), lead singers Sgt Peppers jacket also looked pretty sweet if not a little contrived! But they've got some top notch songs and their singers got a great presence. Brilliant gig! Watch out for these guys methinks... The Immediate were once again outstanding! My god, can these boys play! And they've brought some new songs to their set! 'The Bell' (?) could be wrong about the name, but it sounded superb. They're so tight it's not funny and they've got a great presence. Commanded a very excitable crowd really well and just didn't disappoint! Top marks. I really enjoyed the night, free murphy's, three excellent bands, can it get any better?

I think so! There was definitely some major problem with tickets cos so many people were turned away at the door, even some of my mates who had tickets! But the only reason we can't complain is that tickets were free! Unicron, same thing happened my brother, never got his tix either :o(

i was at this and thought this chapters - hadn't heard them before and they didn't grab me at all i'm afraid, bit 80s or something but maybe that was inspired by his wardrobe which i know is a very shallow way of judging someone. also the room was JAMMED when they were on, i could hardly breath - all their friends must have been there superjimenez - have good old enthusiasm anyway which is a good place to start, his voice was a bit screechy to me though but maybe they was the fault of the venue, the guy in the goggles was a bit annoying but they're trying to be noticed i suppose the immediate - they were why i went and i thought they were great as usual - they're very confident onstage for such a relatively young band and i expect great things from them in future - even their new soungs were great, disappointed they didn't stay on longer

thought The Chapters and SJ were both quite average (with SJ being slightly better) and the Immediate were good, but not at their best.

Heard Super Jiminez on the radio today. Thought they were a bit dull and by the numbers.

Was I the only one who thought sj were really good? I hope not, otherwise I better reassess me taste! The crowd were really into them too. I heard one of their songs on a Hotpress cd last week and I think it's deadly. The Chapters one is good stuff too, especially the ending. Una, i thought The immediate were brill. Why didn't ya think they were at their best? Just wondering, not nagging. Did anyone see the other murphy's gig down in cork? Duke special was headlining it. Didn't get down but would have loved to. what were the other bands like...lemme just name check...Ilyak and Philter?

wasn't keen on SJ myself either i'm afraid. not to slate them, they've obviously done something right to get to the semi finals or whatever but it just wasn't something i'd be interested in. in some respects the attempts to get noticed distracted from the music itself - hyperactive bass player, guy in the goggles, singer in libertines jacket - meant it was all a bit over the top. i've heard the chapters for years and they've evolved a lot in that time, thought they put on an enjoyable set though again it wouldn't be something i'd necessarily seek out. the immediate's gig was a tricky one 'cause it was largely new songs and they hadn't quite figured out the set perfectly, but i thought "the bell" and "nothing comes natural" equal to any of their best work and i'm looking forward to hearing those develop over time.

The Immediate were a class apart from the other bands. I thought the Chapters were second and SJ a distant, distant 3rd. They were one of the most boring bands I've ever seen.

The bands to make it through to the final are: ilya k and the chapters! I'm pretty surprised tbh. I really thought sjimenez were going to go through. Crux, were you at the gig? sj were far from boring - whether you liked the music or not, you couldn't possibly say they were "one of the most boring bands i've ever seen". Come on, seriously...

im sorry but is this site filled with the biggest amount of music snobs in the world or what??? So far, the only band to get an even tentative approval on this mb is The Immediate. Thats fair enough, great potential there from what ive heard of them. The Chapters are a good home band. Ive seen them a few times over the years and they are solid. The chances of success on a grand scale is probably small at this stage but i wish them all the best. I have known SJ since they were called "The Likes" (dunno which name is worse though!) so i have a slight bias and a will to see them succeed. So far the only thing people have commented on is the jacket and goggles. The lads were told by the organisers that they would need to stick out and put on a show to get through so they decided that Rhys would wear his goggles for a laugh. Ronans ex-girlfriend bought him that jacket for xmas or something. Nick has always acted like that on stage and ive known him for 10 odd (very odd! lol) years now. This wasnt some contrived stage act that they put on. Bar the goggles, this is what they always do, its how they feel comfortable on stage. And its strange but its cool. Its better than some wet rag up on stage barely looking up through his floppy fringe. Musically theyre not gonna change the world (yet). But they have some catchy upbeat simple pop songs which is a refreshing change from the norm. If theyre not your cup of tea then fair enough but comment on the music. Otherwise you come across as just some moany ol c*nt who never made it.
