Cheers Garret. Didnt get to see it meself but he rang me straight after it, and by all accounts he did really well in the voting. Just a pity that its all based on quantity of voting rather than quality. Think the live rounds start in January.

Yeah he was talented alright, he got through did he with that other guy, they were the best but if you're a musician who can write your own songs why would you go on that show, its a credibility killer.

Point taken Comet but hopefully if all goes to plan, he could end up playing his own songs on national TV to an audience of thousands. Puts a bit of credibility back into things. Gives his band some much needed attention aswell.
Didnt the Shakes enter a few years ago also and I vaguely remember Dave Fanning playing a load of demos from a Donegal girl who entered.
Anywho, dont mean to carry on too much, but Im sure all 18 year old songwriters know how hard it is to get a gig in Dublin, espcially when you look as young as Alan. When a chance presents itself, you gotta grab it.
But agreed, the show is a farce!

That's a very VERY 'Glass is half full' view of it ... Look at the winners of the show, & the lack of success they've had, never mind someone who gets ko'd early doors.

it is a very optimistic view alright but if he can walk into a pub in town and get a gig, whereas before he would have been laughed at, im sure he'll think its worthwhile.
Dont get me wrong, i cant stand the show. its a popularity contest, not a music contest but like i said, if the opportunity is there, go for it.

They talk about giving singer songwriters a chance and acts with their own material but when it comes to the Helix they'll have themed nights. One week everyone sings Abba, the next week everyone sings a Rat Pack number, the week after showtunes.......so in reality there isn't a whole lot of opportunity for showing off your own material. Its ridiculous how people expected to span so many varied genres. That said i'll be watching every week, I enjoy it for its entertainment value and the best of luck to your brother!

Bad song choice last night!! could have cost him. I think you win and lose those shows on song choice, the band arrangement backing him sounded all wrong, i'd say he'd have been better on his.

I don't think any good can come from shows like these. Sure they give you exposure but you're a star is full of complete tossers, judged by complete tossers and generally watched by tossers.

This is a question of practicality.

The question is, if you want to be a singer/songwriter, then you have to ask yourself, who is your target audience. If the your a star crowd is your target audience, then fine. Off you go. But be prepared for the fickleness of the target audience. Remember, they watch this show year in year out, and last years winner is quickly forgotten about, backed up by the terrible sales of previous winners.

If your target audience is not the Your A star audience, then you are hoping that the "Your a star" label will open doors for you ? This means that the "Your a star" label becomes a key and will follow you around. Does this not mean that booking a venue or releasing an album requires you to use this key and for the promotion of said items to including that labeling. The fact is that the "Your a star" labeling is like a lead chain in the non "Your a star" audience. It has too many negative connotations.
